Concurrently, the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists\u2019 Forum and the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India announced a strike set to begin on April 7 until their concerns are addressed.<\/p>\n
Veteran actor and general secretary of the Forum, Santilal Mukherjee, emphasized the necessity for a collective dialogue among channels, filmmakers, and other stakeholders regarding the safety of cast and crew members. He insisted that emergency response protocols must be established, stating, \u201cThis strike will continue until we receive an appropriate response from the producer and the channel.\u201d Furthermore, he expressed support for Priyanka Sarkar, Banerjee\u2019s wife, should she choose to pursue financial compensation for her husband\u2019s untimely death.<\/p>\n
Renowned actress Rituparna Sengupta articulated the group’s primary demand for clarity surrounding the circumstances of Banerjee\u2019s death. She highlighted the need to ascertain whether safety measures were implemented and if all necessary permissions had been secured, noting that the current situation is riddled with conflicting narratives. “We\u2019ve lost him due to an accident during filming, and we deserve to know the truth,” she remarked, lamenting that it took such a tragedy to highlight the issue of safety in the industry.<\/p>\n
Actor-director Prosenjit Chatterjee echoed these sentiments and mentioned that the protesting coalition has delivered a 24-hour notice to producers and channels prior to commencing the indefinite strike. \u201cThis protest is for Rahul\u2019s family, who deserve transparency regarding the events that transpired,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Banerjee, known for his roles in films like “Chirodini Tumi Je Amar,” “Zulfiqar,” and various television series, met his demise on March 29 while filming the TV serial “Bhole Baba Par Karega” at Talsari beach near Digha, Odisha. Reports indicate that he entered the water alone after filming had concluded, and while his co-star remained on the shore, a sudden wave overwhelmed him. Despite efforts to rescue him, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Digha Sub-divisional Hospital.<\/p>\n
The West Bengal Motion Picture Artists\u2019 Forum has since filed a police report against the production company, Magic Moments Motion Pictures Pvt Ltd, alleging that its directors engaged in a \u201ccriminal conspiracy\u201d and possibly filmed without the required permits. Following this complaint, police initiated a zero FIR for further investigation.<\/p>\n
The rally on April 5 witnessed participation from numerous notable figures within the Bengali film industry, including Aparna Sen, Anjan Dutt, and Srijit Mukherjee, among others, who joined in the call for justice for Banerjee.<\/p>\n
Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, son of director Biswanath Banerjee, married his co-star Priyanka Sarkar in 2010. The couple shares a son and had filed for divorce in 2017, though they later reconciled.<\/p>\n
