Authorities from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have charged a member of the Australian Defence Force Reserves with violating defense laws by allegedly engaging with a foreign military without proper authorization.<\/p>\n
The individual, a 25-year-old man from South Australia, is accused of traveling to Ukraine last year to operate drones for the Ukrainian military. He is set to appear in court in Adelaide today.<\/p>\n
The investigation into the reservist was initiated after the Department of Defence alerted the AFP regarding his unauthorized involvement with a foreign military. Although joining a foreign armed force is not inherently illegal for Australians, the AFP clarified that “defense legislation regulates the work certain individuals can perform for a foreign military, government, or company without authorization.”<\/p>\n
Notably, this case marks the first instance in which the AFP has brought charges for this particular offense.<\/p>\n
On April 2, police executed a search warrant at the man’s residence in Felixstow, located in the northeastern suburbs of Adelaide, where they confiscated several electronic devices, including a mobile phone and a laptop. The investigators claimed that these devices contained evidence linking the man to activities in a foreign conflict.<\/p>\n
It is alleged that the man traveled to Ukraine in May 2025 to serve as a drone operator for the Ukrainian Armed Forces amid the ongoing conflict with Russia and returned to Australia in January of this year.<\/p>\n
He faces a charge under section 115A of the Defence Act 1903, specifically for engaging in foreign work without authorization, which carries a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.<\/p>\n
The reservist is scheduled to appear before the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
AFP Counter Terrorism Commander Paula Hudson emphasized the importance of collaboration with local, Commonwealth, and international partners to safeguard Australia\u2019s interests.
