The leader of a firefighting brigade in northern Victoria has expressed deep sorrow over the theft of valuable firefighting gear and fuel during the Easter weekend. This incident is particularly distressing as it occurred just three months after members of the Terip Terip brigade bravely fought the Longwood fire, which tragically resulted in the death of local farmer Max Hobson.<\/p>\n
Authorities are currently investigating the theft and are appealing to the public for assistance. They are asking anyone who may have seen anything unusual in the vicinity or possesses dash-cam or CCTV footage to reach out to Crime Stoppers.<\/p>\n
During the Easter weekend, thieves made off with approximately $8,000 worth of firefighting equipment and fuel, targeting those who had fought against the Longwood blaze in January. Captain Shannon Roach of the Terip Terip Country Fire Authority (CFA) discovered the breach when she arrived at the brigade’s shed, located around 15 kilometers north-west of Yarck, on Sunday morning and found the side door open.<\/p>\n
\u201cUpon entering, I quickly noticed the significant amount of equipment that had been taken,\u201d Ms. Roach reported, describing the experience as “absolutely heartbreaking,” especially after the challenges faced during the Longwood bushfire.<\/p>\n
The stolen items included essential tools such as water pumps, UHF radios, chainsaws, and 40 liters of petrol. Additionally, a critical piece of communication equipment, a Starlink Mini, was also taken, leaving the station without any means of communication.<\/p>\n
Ms. Roach suspects that the thieves gained access through a sliding glass window. The emotional toll on the team has been considerable, coming so soon after their ordeal with the Longwood fire. She reflected on the feelings of anger and frustration at the violation of their community property, which quickly turned into profound sadness as they were reminded of their recent losses.<\/p>\n
Despite the theft, the brigade remains committed to responding to emergencies, although the loss of three chainsaws will hinder their ability to address storm-related incidents effectively. Ms. Roach noted that while the remaining equipment is mainly for firefighting, she hopes the cooler months will bring with them fewer significant fire incidents.<\/p>\n
