A tragic incident occurred on Sunday morning at the Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI) in Pune, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old cadet, Vishal Verma. The young athlete, originally from Ayodhya district in Uttar Pradesh and a highly accomplished national-level sportsman, suffered fatal injuries when the rim of a basketball hoop fell on him while he was attempting to hang from it.<\/p>\n
Cadets at the institute indicated that there had been prior concerns regarding the stability of the basketball pole that ultimately caused the accident. Additionally, the ambulance response time of nearly 30 minutes has raised questions about whether timely medical intervention could have altered the outcome of the situation.<\/p>\n
According to Prashant Relekar, the investigating officer from the Induri police station, witness statements are currently being gathered. The lack of CCTV footage at the basketball court is hindering the investigation process. An official police report has not yet been filed as Vishal’s family is still traveling from Uttar Pradesh.<\/p>\n
The incident unfolded at approximately 7:20 AM, a time when many cadets were still asleep due to it being a Sunday. Having completed his morning training, Vishal was on his way back to Hostel No. 1, which is part of Morarji House, when he stopped at the basketball court. In an attempt to perform a dunk, a typical action for athletes, he grabbed the rim.<\/p>\n
As he hung from the rim, the basketball pole, which had become weakened from rust, collapsed under the strain, resulting in the entire structure falling onto his head.<\/p>\n
Senior cadets reported that a formal complaint about the instability of both basketball poles had been submitted to the sports committee around three weeks prior to the incident. One cadet remarked, \u201cNo repairs seem to have been conducted.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cadets also expressed concerns regarding the financial contributions they make towards the maintenance of the institute’s facilities, which includes sports infrastructure. \u201cStudents at TMI pay around Rs 1.5 lakh annually for these services, and a four-year B.Tech degree in Marine Engineering costs nearly Rs 27 lakh. This money is hard-earned,\u201d stated a senior cadet.<\/p>\n
Dr. Sanjeet Kanungo, the Principal of TMI, expressed deep regret over the incident, labeling it as both tragic and unfortunate. However, he refuted claims that any previous complaints about the safety of the basketball poles had been made. He mentioned, \u201cThe institute is looking into the medical response shortcomings that were evident and is committed to improving them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Regarding maintenance procedures, Kanungo noted that while a structural audit is performed every 30 years and there is a routine maintenance schedule, no formal auditing process is in place. He stated that the basketball pole in question was installed shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
He emphasized that the incident was indeed an accident and that maintenance concerns are prioritized whenever they are raised. \u201cThis situation should not have occurred, and perhaps we need to implement stricter checks. There was no negligence on our part,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
