First Nations voters in South Australia have reported experiencing discrimination at polling stations during the recent Voice to Parliament election. Allegations have surfaced regarding the treatment of these voters, prompting the electoral commission to announce a detailed investigation into the matter.<\/p>\n
The South Australian Aboriginal Affairs Minister is contemplating the initiation of an independent review in light of claims that some voters were asked intrusive questions about their racial identity at polling booths, while others faced excessively long wait times.<\/p>\n
Provisionally-elected representatives for the SA Voice have conveyed to ABC News that some officers from the Electoral Commission of South Australia (ECSA) posed “intrusive” questions about voters’ Aboriginal identities. They also reportedly made “unsolicited comments” regarding Aboriginal history when voters requested their ballots. Ashum Owen, a candidate from the central region, recounted that when voters identified themselves as Aboriginal and stated their intention to participate in the Voice election, ECSA staff responded with skepticism, questioning their eligibility: “Are you sure? This is for Aboriginal people,” he recounted.<\/p>\n
Owen emphasized that such experiences foster an unsafe environment for Aboriginal individuals, noting that some voters received unsolicited remarks about Aboriginal history while waiting in line alongside other community members.<\/p>\n
This election marks the second occasion that South Australian First Nations voters have cast their ballots to elect representatives for the legislated Voice to Parliament. The election coincided with the state election, which had been previously stated by SA Electoral Commissioner Mick Sherry as a measure to facilitate voting for First Nations participants.<\/p>\n
An estimated 32,342 First Nations voters were registered to participate in this year’s Voice election, but turnout was underwhelming, with less than 11 percent casting their votes. This turnout represented a slight increase from the inaugural Voice election in 2024, where fewer than 10 percent of eligible voters participated.<\/p>\n
Melissa Clarke, another provisionally-elected member from the central region, expressed that voters felt “frustrated, disrespected, confused, or let down by the process.” She noted that many of the 60 voters she spoke with reported feeling “racially judged” by electoral officers, particularly amongst those with lighter skin tones.<\/p>\n
Clarke recounted an incident where a community member was informed that they were not recognized as Aboriginal in the electoral database, thus rendering them ineligible to vote. She emphasized that these experiences contribute to feelings of racism and scrutiny regarding one’s Aboriginal identity.<\/p>\n
Concerns have also been raised about the lack of clarity regarding the voting process for the Voice election. Owen and Clarke reported that some voters were not informed that they needed to specifically request to vote in the Voice election upon their arrival at polling places. The absence of adequate signage and information led many to miss their opportunity to vote, despite their initial intentions. Additionally, some voters reported being instructed to queue separately for the state and Voice elections, causing frustration and resulting in some leaving without casting their votes.<\/p>\n
There were also instances where voters were mistakenly marked as having already voted in the Voice election after only participating in the state election. Clarke mentioned that when voters expressed their desire to vote in the Voice election, electoral staff appeared unprepared and unsure of how to assist, leading to significant delays.<\/p>\n
In light of these incidents, both Owen and Clarke have reached out to Commissioner Sherry, requesting an apology from the Electoral Commission, a review of the election process, and enhanced training for staff. Clarke expressed her disappointment over the challenges faced by Aboriginal voters, stating, “Democracy only works well when it works for everybody,” highlighting the need for improvements in accessibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.<\/p>\n
Minister Kyam Maher acknowledged that numerous First Nations community members had expressed concerns about the Voice election to his office and indicated that he would consider the possibility of an independent review. He stated, “It is disappointing to hear feedback from individuals who faced difficulties casting their votes or were unaware of their voting rights.” In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for ECSA confirmed that a thorough review of the election process would be conducted. “We are very concerned to learn that some SA First Nations Voice to Parliament voters had these experiences.
