In a clash between the bottom two teams in Sydney, the Giants suffered a defeat at the hands of the Queensland Firebirds, with a final score of 78-55. This victory marked the end of a challenging 15-game losing streak for the Firebirds, while the Giants’ performance highlighted their struggles to keep pace with their competitors.<\/p>\n
The Melbourne Mavericks provided the Adelaide Thunderbirds with their toughest challenge thus far, resulting in the closest match of the round. Ultimately, the Thunderbirds, the top-ranked team, secured their fourth consecutive win, finishing at 55-48.<\/p>\n

The former chief executive of Netball Australia, Kelly Ryan, left her position in December 2023 amidst criticisms that the sport was lagging in various areas. However, the new gambling reforms indicate that netball’s decision to avoid sports betting was a prudent one.<\/p>\n
Ryan’s tenure was marked by challenges, particularly financial ones, as Netball Australia faced a $4 million debt and sought to recover its commercial viability in the wake of the pandemic. This situation sparked controversy when it was revealed that the grand final location had been sold to the highest bidder, and potential sponsorship deals with Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting and various gambling companies were considered before ultimately falling through.<\/p>\n
During an interview on ABC News Breakfast, Ryan acknowledged that such sponsorships could be financially beneficial for netball, stating, “The reality is that gambling sponsorships are very lucrative.” She emphasized that the sport needed to be more open to new possibilities. However, this perspective was met with resistance from the netball community, leading to the abandonment of proposed sponsorships from two betting companies.<\/p>\n
Concerns arose regarding the appropriateness of aligning a “clean sport” like netball with an industry associated with harm, as highlighted in a letter from the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation. The letter posed a critical question about whether the potential financial relief from gambling partnerships was worth the risk to the sport’s reputation and the well-being of young athletes.<\/p>\n
Following a contentious pay dispute with players, Ryan resigned in December 2023. Reflecting on her time in office, she suggested that netball must embrace fundamental changes to thrive. While it is true that netball needs to adopt bolder commercial strategies, its absence of a prominent men’s league has necessitated innovative approaches that uphold healthy values for women and girls.<\/p>\n
With Australia grappling with significant gambling issues, including the highest per-capita losses globally, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has introduced new regulations aimed at limiting wagering companies’ influence in sports starting January 2027. These changes will prohibit gambling branding on uniforms and venues, restrict celebrity promotions, and ban betting advertisements on live sports broadcasts during specific hours.<\/p>\n
Although some experts believe these measures do not go far enough, they are expected to significantly affect sports like the NRL and AFL, which heavily rely on gambling investments. In contrast, netball appears well-positioned, having opted for a long-term vision over quick financial fixes.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, the Giants are facing significant challenges. Winless after four rounds, they have matched their worst start to a Super Netball season, reminiscent of the 2024 season when they finished at the bottom of the standings.
