The graffiti, which included the phrase “F** Israel” along with a depiction of the Palestinian flag, was discovered early Sunday morning. Authorities swiftly removed the vandalism within hours since the attraction is prominently situated along the Pacific Highway.<\/p>\n
Coffs Clarence Police District Superintendent Joanne Schultz discussed the ongoing investigation during an interview with ABC Coffs Coast Breakfast, indicating that the case is being treated as a potential hate speech violation. “While it may be classified as graffiti and malicious damage at its least serious level, it could escalate to a hate speech offense,” she stated.<\/p>\n
In light of the Bondi terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals during a Hanukkah celebration, the New South Wales government reinforced hate crime laws in December. These regulations define a hate crime as any public act\u2014such as graffiti, online posts, or slogans\u2014that is intended to incite hatred and instills fear in those targeted.<\/p>\n
Penalties under these laws can involve imprisonment for up to two years or fines reaching $11,000. Additionally, the federal government has also strengthened its hate speech laws, enabling authorities to take action against suspected hate groups while raising penalties for hate crimes. Concerns have been raised that these laws might suppress legitimate criticism of foreign governments like Israel.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Schultz warned that individuals sharing images of the graffiti online could also face consequences under the law and advised against posting such content. “This matter falls within the broad scope of the legislation, and I would strongly recommend that people refrain from sharing those images,” she commented. “It is certainly offensive to segments of our community and is not accepted.” <\/p>\n
Michael Lockman, the general manager of The Big Banana, suggested that the venue had previously been targeted by the same group responsible for this incident but chose not to elaborate further due to concerns about potential retaliation.<\/p>\n
A representative from NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley expressed disapproval of the graffiti, stating that police have been empowered to tackle such behavior effectively. “The graffiti in Coffs Harbour is unacceptable, and law enforcement is currently investigating,” the spokesperson declared. “Antisemitism is an unacceptable blemish on our community and will not be tolerated.”<\/p>\n
