The Australian War Memorial is set to reassess its exhibition dedicated to Ben Roberts-Smith, who is currently facing war crimes allegations.<\/p>\n
This exhibition, located in the Hall of Valour, showcases Mr. Roberts-Smith’s military uniform and medals. Following his recent arrest at Sydney Airport, where he was charged with five counts of murder related to war crimes, the memorial has decided to review the display.<\/p>\n
While the Prime Minister has chosen not to address the issue directly, various political figures have expressed concerns regarding the duration it took for charges to be filed. The memorial\u2019s display, which honors all 102 recipients of the Victoria Cross in Australia, has previously been modified to reflect Mr. Roberts-Smith’s loss in a defamation lawsuit against Nine Newspapers.<\/p>\n
An interpretive panel next to the exhibit once noted the federal court’s ruling but concluded with a statement emphasizing that Mr. Roberts-Smith had “not been charged with any offence under criminal law.” A spokesperson for the Australian War Memorial confirmed that the display will undergo another review in light of the recent developments.<\/p>\n
“The Memorial acknowledges media reports concerning the arrest of Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG,” the spokesperson stated. “In response, the wording on the interpretive panel will be reassessed, although the display of his uniform, equipment, and medals will remain unchanged. The Memorial will continue to monitor the situation and make updates as necessary.”<\/p>\n
As part of its $500 million redevelopment, two portraits of Mr. Roberts-Smith, including a prominent piece by Michael Zavros titled “Pistol Grip,” have been removed. Additionally, an exhibition detailing Australia’s involvement in the Afghanistan conflict is scheduled to launch in June, which is expected to address findings from the Brereton inquiry regarding alleged war crimes.<\/p>\n
In response to the charges, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese refrained from making any comments, stating he would not discuss a matter currently under judicial consideration. He avoided confirming whether the government had been consulted prior to the charges being announced.<\/p>\n
Opposition leader Angus Taylor also opted not to delve into the particulars of the case but emphasized that these developments should not tarnish the reputation of the Australian military. “The respect and gratitude we owe to those who serve our nation in perilous conditions should remain undiminished,” he remarked.<\/p>\n
Some politicians have been more vocal, including One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, who expressed unwavering support for Mr. Roberts-Smith on social media. “Ben and his defense family need the backing of the Australian public right now, and I will stand by him unlike many other politicians,” she stated.<\/p>\n
Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott questioned the timing of the charges, arguing that many former special forces soldiers should not have to endure prolonged uncertainty over investigations that have only led to charges in a couple of cases. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” he shared on social media. “If the evidence is substantial, cases should be resolved promptly, or individuals should be allowed to move on with their lives to avoid the process itself becoming a punishment.”<\/p>\n
Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie echoed similar sentiments, calling the arrest a “tragedy” and suggesting the duration of the investigation raises questions. “Our SAS warriors undertake a difficult and thankless job on our behalf; it is concerning that it has taken so long for this to come to light,” she commented.<\/p>\n
Greens Senator David Shoebridge described the arrest as a “moment of accountability,” while advocating for increased scrutiny on military leaders involved in the operations in Afghanistan. “For true justice to be achieved, greater attention must be focused on the senior officers who were responsible for overseeing Australia’s deployment,” he asserted.<\/p>\n
