Since the rise of Sleep Token’s unique blend of pop-infused progressive metal on TikTok in 2023, other masked acts like President and Cenobia have gained similar recognition.<\/p>\n
Many of these masked performers incorporate elements of pop into their music, with groups such as Sleep Token, President, and the emerging French band Sunborn fusing heavy guitar riffs with electronic elements. Ghost, in particular, infuses their sound with melodic influences reminiscent of pop icons like ABBA. In contrast, some bands remain unapologetically extreme, including Portal, Briqueville, Batushka, and Kanonenfieber. This phenomenon is predominantly male-driven, allowing men to explore expressive costumes that might be ridiculed outside the stage. Nevertheless, female artists like Cenobia and Maria Franz from the band Heilung also contribute to this masked identity in metal.<\/p>\n
Alpha explained the psychological shift that masks induce, likening it to the experience of marathon runners entering a trance state after prolonged exertion. He emphasized that this transformation is a significant draw for various heavy music styles.<\/p>\n
While the current prevalence of masked metal bands is unprecedented, the trend itself is not new. The explosive popularity of Slipknot in 1999 brought forth a fearsome image characterized by their aggressive sound and intimidating masks. Earlier, the band Gwar emerged from Virginia\u2019s punk scene in the mid-1980s, becoming the first masked metal group to make a substantial impact. Their outrageous performances featured exaggerated personas and costumes, satirizing the theatrical elements of earlier bands like Iron Maiden, who were influenced by shock rock pioneers such as Alice Cooper and Kiss.<\/p>\n
Mike Derks, known as Balsac the Jaws of Death from Gwar, explained their intention to mock the superficial satanic and monstrous imagery in metal. He questioned what would happen if those themes were taken to their logical extremes. With their outlandish characters and costumes, including founder Dave “Oderus Urungus” Brockie’s infamous giant alien penis, Gwar pushed the boundaries of metal’s grotesque aesthetics. Their creativity was grounded in a DIY ethos, as they scavenged for materials to create their elaborate costumes, driven in part by Brockie’s artistic background and disdain for elitist attitudes.<\/p>\n
Gwar’s performances often included sharp political satire, targeting figures from Queen Elizabeth II to Vladimir Putin, and they notably “killed” Elon Musk and Donald Trump at Chicago\u2019s Riot Fest last year, provoking backlash from right-wing audiences.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on this, Derks noted the surreal nature of receiving death threats over their provocative art, emphasizing the importance of artistic freedom in a country where such expressions should be embraced rather than censored.<\/p>\n
Many contemporary masked artists, while perhaps less extreme than Gwar, have created their own elaborate narratives. Ghost presents themselves as a subversive religious organization led by a skeletal pope, complete with a YouTube series and plans for a feature film. Sleep Token’s music, described as “offerings,” revolves around their devotion to a deity known as Sleep, leading to extensive speculation about the meanings behind their lyrics, especially since the band rarely engages in interviews. The anonymity afforded by their masks allows these groups to craft immersive, escapist worlds that resonate with fans. When Sleep Token headlined Download Festival to a crowd of 80,000, many attendees participated as enthusiastic cosplayers, while Ghost has successfully marketed merchandise linked to their enigmatic frontman, Papa Emeritus.<\/p>\n
