The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) has highlighted a crucial juncture for the tourism sector, indicating that rising fuel prices and operational challenges are pushing many businesses to the edge.<\/p>\n
Despite robust tourism bookings during the Easter long weekend, the QTIC expressed concern that this surge might not lead to increased profitability for operators. The council has reached out to both state and federal governments, urging for prompt and coordinated action to support the visitor economy, which they describe as facing a critical “tipping point.”<\/p>\n
As many operators contend with soaring operational expenses, cancellations, and the ongoing fuel crisis, QTIC chief executive Natassia Wheeler noted that while the Easter weekend brought a welcome boost in bookings for some, others encountered significant cancellations and a decline in future reservations.<\/p>\n
“Some caravan parks reported over 200 cancellations, resulting in an economic impact exceeding $52,000 directly,” Wheeler stated. “This figure does not account for the wider repercussions of such losses.”<\/p>\n
Data from Localis, which aggregates information from platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com, indicated that occupancy rates for accommodations rose across various regions during the holiday period. The Whitsundays saw a nearly 50% increase, while the Sunshine Coast reported a 41.84% rise. Outback Queensland and tropical north Queensland also experienced growth in occupancy rates of 31.49% and 31.32%, respectively.<\/p>\n
However, Wheeler cautioned that these occupancy figures may not equate to sustainable profitability, as many businesses are struggling to manage escalating costs related to fuel, insurance, energy, and labor. “This is a pivotal moment for tourism in Queensland and likely across the nation,” she remarked.<\/p>\n
QTIC is advocating for a targeted stabilization package from the government, which would include measures to alleviate costs for tourism operators and coordinated approaches to address fuel and aviation expenses. They have also proposed the formation of a joint taskforce to assess the impact of fuel prices on tourism and to provide clear national guidelines that can help maintain consumer confidence regarding pricing and surcharges.<\/p>\n
Wheeler clarified that the industry is not seeking a bailout but rather “targeted, time-limited stabilization.” She emphasized that the repercussions of inaction would be greater than the costs of implementing support measures now, as regional businesses are already operating on thin margins and cannot endure additional shocks.<\/p>\n
In response, Minister for the Environment and Tourism Andrew Powell stated that the Queensland government is committed to supporting the tourism sector through targeted investments in events, ecotourism, and unique visitor experiences as part of its Destination 2045 initiative. “We recognize that this national crisis is affecting all Queenslanders, and we will continue to push for a national dashboard to provide information on fuel availability across the country,” he said.<\/p>\n
On the Sunshine Coast, quad bike tour operator Charles Marais has indicated that he might consider a temporary closure due to operational costs surpassing revenue generated during the holiday period. He explained that he requires fuel for both the bikes and the bus used for transporting tourists.<\/p>\n
“Trade during Easter was down approximately 50% from our usual performance,” Marais reported. “The mounting costs are concerning, and I may need to shut down temporarily as the incoming business is insufficient for viability.” He expressed a desire for government support similar to what was offered during the COVID-19 pandemic, stating, “We need assistance to get through this; while I am in a relatively stable position, many other tourism businesses are at risk of shutting down.”<\/p>\n
Ben Duffy, a cruise operator in Hervey Bay, shared his worries as the whale watching season approaches, typically the peak period for bookings. He reported a staggering 70% decrease in reservations for sunset cruises and day trips over Easter, raising concerns about the sustainability of his business if cancellations persist.<\/p>\n
“Whale cruise bookings have slowed down dramatically due to the prevailing uncertainty,” Duffy noted. He mentioned that fuel and supply costs have surged by around 50%, which may compel him to make tough decisions if the situation does not improve soon. “I would prefer to absorb these increased costs, as our main goal is to provide enjoyable experiences for our guests,” he stated, while acknowledging the challenges ahead in planning for the upcoming season.<\/p>\n
Duffy also criticized the recent reduction in fuel excise as insufficient to mitigate the impact of high fuel prices and called for additional support for the tourism sector.
