Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila is projected to make landfall on Cape York Peninsula starting Sunday. Although it is classified as a category three cyclone, it is expected to be less severe than the former Tropical Cyclone Narelle, which previously impacted the region.<\/p>\n
Tourism operators are expressing concerns that potential visitors may choose to avoid northern Queensland in light of the cyclone’s approach. The Bureau of Meteorology indicates that the effects of Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila, currently positioned approximately 1,300 kilometers off the coast of Queensland, will primarily affect the Far North region.<\/p>\n
Forecasts suggest that Maila will hit Cape York Peninsula on Sunday afternoon, bringing with it strong winds and significant rainfall. Senior meteorologist Liam Smart noted that while Maila is larger than Narelle, its intensity is expected to be lower.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are two very distinct cyclones,\u201d he stated. \u201cMaila is much larger than Narelle, but it likely won’t reach the same strength.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tourism operators who faced cancellations due to Narelle are urging travelers not to alter their plans. On Wednesday morning, Maila was approximately 980 kilometers east of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, and exhibited wind gusts reaching up to 295 kilometers per hour. The cyclone may strengthen as it progresses slowly across the Solomon Sea before shifting southwest by Thursday.<\/p>\n
Smart added that Maila might weaken as it traverses the mountain ranges of Papua New Guinea and enters the cooler waters of the Coral Sea. \u201cThere is some uncertainty regarding the exact landfall location,\u201d he remarked. \u201cWe anticipate it will cross somewhere between Cooktown and the northern tip of the peninsula, but we will be able to provide a more precise forecast as the event draws nearer.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Smart, the rainfall linked to Maila is expected to be mostly limited to the Far North region. However, he cautioned that additional rainfall could occur as easterly winds begin to impact the coastline after the cyclone passes.<\/p>\n
In Port Douglas, located hundreds of kilometers south of the expected landfall, tourism operator Jason Heffernan is encouraging visitors not to cancel their trips. He emphasized that the greatest challenge during cyclone warnings is the prevalence of misinformation regarding the vastness of Queensland.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany individuals from southern regions believe that as soon as a cyclone appears in the Coral Sea, Cairns and Port Douglas are directly affected,\u201d Heffernan explained. \u201cHowever, the distance is comparable to that between Melbourne and Canberra.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the previous cyclone Narelle, Port Douglas experienced heavy rain and strong winds, but Heffernan noted that many tourists unnecessarily canceled their visits once the weather improved. \u201cWe do see a lot of people anxious to cancel their vacation plans, but it\u2019s typically unwarranted,\u201d he said. \u201cThe rainforest benefits from the rain, and visiting during or shortly after wet conditions means the rainforest will be lush and vibrant.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for the current tropical cyclone season, which runs from November to April, senior climatologist Zhi-Weng Chua from the Bureau of Meteorology stated that there have been 10 tropical cyclones this season, six of which reached category three or higher. \u201cTypically, we see three to four cyclones make landfall, but we have already surpassed that with six,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n
If Maila crosses Far North Queensland this weekend, it will mark the seventh severe tropical cyclone of the season. \u201cHaving recorded 10 tropical cyclones so far, and potentially an 11th, indicates a trend above the average,\u201d Chua commented.<\/p>\n
The weather forecast for the remainder of Queensland is expected to be stable and primarily sunny throughout the week, with some isolated showers anticipated north of Mackay on Wednesday. Additional showers are also expected in Central Queensland north of Gladstone on Thursday, with scattered rainfall predicted between Ingham and Cooktown in the Far North.
