The ceasefire agreement was reached on Tuesday evening, just hours after President Trump had issued a stark warning, threatening to obliterate Iran’s “whole civilization” unless it ensured the safe transit of commercial shipping through the critical waterway. Trump’s announcement came shortly after Pakistan, acting as a mediator, encouraged him to withdraw the ultimatum he had imposed at 8 p.m. Eastern Time for Iran to comply with his demands.
