On Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh Police initiated a pilot program utilizing Artificial Intelligence, termed the City-Reducing Traffic Congestion (C-RTC Scheme), across 20 districts in the state. This initiative aims to minimize travel times throughout urban areas.<\/p>\n
Officials reported that, following an extensive evaluation lasting several months, 172 specific road segments were selected based on their congestion levels. This analysis aimed to pinpoint routes with the highest traffic delays.<\/p>\n
Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna indicated that the project was developed in response to directives from the Chief Minister, who emphasized the need to alleviate traffic issues in cities, thereby facilitating smoother and quicker commutes for residents.<\/p>\n
The innovative system is designed to assess travel durations\u2014minimum, maximum, and average\u2014and presents this information in both graphical and tabular forms. Additionally, it highlights real-time traffic congestion points on a digital map.<\/p>\n
To address heavy traffic during peak hours, the Traffic Directorate, tasked with executing the project, has identified the routes most susceptible to congestion within the first phase, which encompasses all seven commissionerates and one significant district from each range.<\/p>\n
In an interview with The Indian Express, the DGP outlined that the primary aim of the C-RTC scheme is to shorten travel times during peak hours along the specified routes. The initiative focuses on maintaining smooth traffic flow by eliminating obstacles on these roads.<\/p>\n
Traffic Directorate ADG A Satish Ganesh elaborated that targeted, route-specific interventions will be employed to meet this objective. Each selected route will be overseen by a designated route marshal, tasked with implementing the scheme effectively on-site.<\/p>\n
These route marshals will be chosen from qualified traffic inspectors or sub-inspectors. Appointments will be made by the district police chief based on the recommendations of the designated traffic officer.<\/p>\n
When necessary, route marshals may also take on additional traffic management responsibilities. The station house officers (SHOs) of police stations along these routes will collaborate closely with the route marshals to ensure comprehensive support.<\/p>\n
Each commissionerate or district will have its senior-most traffic officer serve as the nodal officer for traffic management under this scheme.<\/p>\n
The traffic management strategy will adopt a comprehensive 5E approach\u2014Education and Awareness, Enforcement, Engineering and Technological Intervention, Encroachment Removal, and E-rickshaw Operation Management, according to officials.<\/p>\n
This AI-driven system is accessible via smartphones without requiring specialized technical skills and includes comparisons of historical data for various time frames (including the past two months, one month, three weeks, two weeks, and the current week\/day). A total of 172 route marshals will be appointed to oversee the identified routes, with additional traffic personnel available for support as needed.<\/p>\n
The Traffic Directorate will routinely monitor and assess traffic conditions on the identified routes. The DGP announced that a thorough evaluation of the scheme’s effectiveness will take place after one month to determine its success and potential for further expansion.<\/p>\n
