This event occurs amidst a challenging year for the seafood industry, which is now looking towards increased demand during the Easter season to provide relief.

Following reports of the mass fish mortality near Port Lincoln, both scientists and seafood industry representatives were quick to dispel any concerns regarding a connection to the local toxic algal bloom or the safety of the fish caught in the area.

The Australian Southern Bluefin Tuna Industry Association noted a significant mortality event in March when a tow cage filled with fish traversed discolored waters south of Port Lincoln, leading to the deaths of a considerable number of tuna during that time.

This incident has emerged at a period marked by reduced consumer demand for seafood, largely fueled by apprehensions regarding the algal bloom, alongside rising operational costs, fuel supply issues, and adverse weather conditions that have severely impacted the industry.

Despite the troubling nature of the recent fish mortality event, findings from the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) clarified that it is entirely disconnected from the harmful algal bloom that has raised concerns among seafood producers.

SARDI identified Vicicitus globosus as the responsible phytoplankton, emphasizing that it is “not related to Karenia,” as explained by executive director Mike Steer. He highlighted that this situation is distinct from the known Karenia species associated with harmful blooms, which are located further up the gulf.

Mr. Steer noted that Vicicitus globosus has been observed in South Australian waters previously, with the last significant impact on the industry occurring in 1996, labeling it as a characteristic of the marine ecosystem.

The fish mortality occurred offshore, where seasonal upwellings have introduced new nutrients, creating favorable conditions for the phytoplankton’s temporary proliferation. SARDI has conducted water sampling in the area and found isolated occurrences of the species in the Southern Spencer Gulf, indicating that the tuna population near Port Lincoln remains unaffected.

Daniel Casement, CEO of the Southern Bluefin Tuna Association, acknowledged the need for vigilance concerning the phytoplankton. “It is certainly concerning; our production system is heavily reliant on the health of our fish, and any disruption is worrying,” he remarked. He advocated for enhanced water sampling and monitoring to ensure Vicicitus globosus does not threaten the tuna fishery or other local fisheries.

Oceanographic models suggest that the phytoplankton will maintain a relatively stable presence in the area where the fish mortality occurred, and monitoring efforts will persist.

This time of year typically sees a spike in seafood consumption, especially during Easter, prompting the seafood sector, including Seafood Industry Australia, to encourage consumers to support local businesses during these challenging times.

Nevertheless, some businesses continue to face difficulties, attributing their struggles to broader economic issues and the lingering effects of the algal bloom. Craig McCathie, owner of Fresh Fish Place, reported a 12 percent decline in retail sales in the week leading up to Easter compared to the previous year.

“The statistics are clear,” Mr. McCathie stated. “With the rising costs of fuel and the public perception surrounding the algal bloom over the last year, it’s understandable that people are hesitant to purchase seafood.” He noted a temporary uptick in trade earlier this year, which he credited to a government voucher program aimed at mitigating the effects of the algal bloom.

In contrast, Kris Bunder, owner of Del Giorno’s Cafe in Port Lincoln, expressed optimism, stating that their business has not been adversely affected by the algal bloom, at least not in reality. “We are hopeful and will continue to promote that South Australian seafood, particularly from Port Lincoln and the Eyre Peninsula, is safe. We wouldn’t serve it if it weren’t,” he assured.

The southern bluefin tuna harvesting season commenced last week in Port Lincoln, and despite the recent downturn, Mr. McCathie remains hopeful for future recovery. “We need to persevere through this period and look forward to a time when it will be just a distant memory,” he concluded.

Environmental authorities in South Australia have confirmed that a recent incident involving the deaths of numerous fish off the coast of Port Lincoln is not related to the state’s harmful algal bloom, assuring consumers that seafood from the region remains safe for consumption.
