Former US Open champion Gary Woodland has recently shared insights into his struggles with mental health in an interview leading up to the US Masters tournament this week.<\/p>\n
Woodland, who secured his spot at the Masters by winning the Houston Open last month, candidly expressed that during one of the rounds, he experienced intense feelings of paranoia, saying, “I battled the last 10 holes, thinking people were trying to kill me.” This statement is not a flippant joke, but rather a serious acknowledgment of his ongoing mental health challenges, which he hopes will resonate with others facing trauma, anxiety, and PTSD.<\/p>\n
The mental distress that Woodland experiences persists even in the serene surroundings of Augusta National. His situation stems from a medical diagnosis that revealed a lesion on his brain, necessitating surgery that involved removing a significant section from the side of his head. In September 2023, prior to the procedure, Woodland wrote letters to his family in case complications arose during surgery, which aimed to excise as much of the lesion as possible.<\/p>\n
In a recent interview with the Golf Channel, Woodland disclosed that while the surgery was deemed successful, it left him grappling with PTSD due to its proximity to the amygdala, the brain region associated with fear and anxiety. Nevertheless, he returned to the golf course in January 2024, gradually finding his rhythm and making enough cuts to maintain his motivation.<\/p>\n
This past month, he triumphed at the Houston Open after overcoming episodes of hypervigilance, finishing the tournament with a remarkable 3-under 67 on the final day for a five-shot victory over Nicolai Hojgaard. Despite his achievements, few were aware of the ongoing battles Woodland faced, which included moments of overwhelming anxiety that could lead him to rush to restrooms in tears, a common symptom of PTSD.<\/p>\n
“I spoke to PGA Tour security that night, sharing my struggles, and each time I looked up during the weekend, my security team was right behind me,” Woodland recounted about his experience at the Houston Open. “Last year, I faced this alone, and it was unbearable. Knowing I had someone there for support was crucial to my victory.” His impressive performance on the course also played a vital role, with one of his tee shots clocking in at an impressive 315 km\/h, signaling a return to the strength that contributed to his 2019 US Open win.<\/p>\n
Woodland emphasized the societal pressure, particularly for men and athletes, to remain stoic and resilient in the face of adversity. He acknowledged, “This is one battle that I couldn’t conquer on my own. I tried, but it wasn\u2019t effective.” Recognizing the importance of seeking help, he has found significant improvement through support.<\/p>\n
Not one to focus solely on his own challenges, Woodland hopes that sharing his experiences can aid others in similar situations. His decision to discuss his PTSD diagnosis publicly stems from a desire to break the stigma surrounding mental health. “In our society, admitting to what may be perceived as a weakness can be daunting,” he stated. “However, sharing my feelings has made me stronger than I realized. This week at the Masters will present another challenge for Woodland, as he can expect greater attention following his recent success. The close proximity of fans at Augusta National could be daunting, but the PGA Tour has collaborated with the Masters to ensure that Woodland has the security he requires to feel safe.<\/p>\n
“There might not be a golf tournament in the world that is as secure as this one, which is reassuring, but I still face the mental battle of feeling safe,” Woodland admitted. “I can’t predict when my anxiety will strike, and it can be triggered by various stimuli, whether it’s a fan or even a camera operator passing by.
