Farmers in South Australia are taking a bold step this year by sowing winter crops significantly earlier than usual, seizing the opportunity presented by unprecedented rainfall. After enduring two consecutive years of drought, this season’s rainfall has raised hopes for a fruitful harvest, but it also brings a host of challenges, including rising diesel and fertiliser costs that are heightening concerns for agricultural producers.<\/p>\n
In a bid to capitalize on the beneficial moisture, some farmers have opted to plant before the traditional timeline, which typically begins around Anzac Day and extends into May. James Venning, a farmer from Bute, made the decision to plant canola weeks ahead of schedule, even disregarding his agronomist’s counsel. He acknowledged that while it might be “definitely too early,” the exceptional moisture recorded in March encouraged his early planting, despite forecasts indicating a potential dry spell ahead.<\/p>\n
“This is the earliest we’ve ever started by at least two to three weeks,” Venning commented, recognizing the risk of frost affecting his early-sown canola. “Canola generally benefits from earlier planting, but this is uncharted territory,” he added.<\/p>\n
Brad Perry, the chief executive of Grain Producers SA, reflected on the challenging conditions facing growers. He noted that the current period is particularly difficult due to the numerous uncertainties affecting the industry. However, he also pointed out that the moisture levels prior to planting are among the best seen in years, prompting some farmers to begin sowing early to utilize the sub-soil moisture, despite the inherent risks of early growth facing warmer days.<\/p>\n
A recent survey involving nearly 800 growers across South Australia revealed rising anxiety regarding the availability and costs of critical inputs like fuel and fertilisers. These costs have sharply increased, largely due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which have disrupted the supply of urea, a key fertiliser ingredient.<\/p>\n
Many farmers, like Venning, have expressed concerns about their financial viability, especially after enduring years of drought. Venning noted that he was fortunate to have secured his fertiliser needs in advance, bolstered by the confidence gained from the wet conditions in March. “Despite the challenges, the wet weather made it easier to justify purchasing the necessary fertiliser,” he stated.<\/p>\n
Another farmer, Phillip Docking from the Eyre Peninsula, is also moving forward with his planting plans, even though his budget has increased by at least $180,000 due to rising costs. “The budget was set just before the conflict began, and then everything changed,” Docking explained, highlighting that fertiliser prices alone have surged by around $100,000. “We need to apply urea for our crops like canola and wheat,” he added, emphasizing the importance of maintaining crop production despite financial pressures.<\/p>\n
Sean Hickey, a senior agricultural analyst at Bendigo Bank, observed that farmers who have commenced planting will have limited flexibility in adjusting their strategies in response to current market conditions. “Most growers had their planting plans established a year in advance, so significant changes are unlikely at this stage,” he noted. He anticipates a slight shift in planting preferences, with some farmers potentially favoring barley over wheat due to its higher market prices and lower fertiliser requirements.<\/p>\n
