Parvathy Thiruvothu, an acclaimed actor and founding member of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), has voiced her concerns, emphasizing that the system often fails those who bravely come forward as survivors, frequently allowing the accused to evade justice. In an interview with News18 Showsha, she remarked, \u201cThe recent arrest of Ranjith does not surprise me. It reflects a pattern of repeated offenses where perpetrators are not held accountable for their past actions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite this not being the first time Ranjith has faced allegations, Parvathy noted that the conversation often shifts to whether the survivor’s accounts should be trusted. \u201cThere will always be debates about this. We have to navigate our lives, work, and advocate for change while bearing the weight of these discussions. I resonate with Kareena Kapoor Khan’s sentiment of exhaustion regarding this ongoing issue,\u201d she expressed.<\/p>\n
She criticized the superficiality of the penalties that offenders receive, describing them as mere gestures rather than substantive action. \u201cWhat is presented as punishment is often just for show. Many questioned why victims did not come forward when the Hema Committee report was released. They fail to see that speaking out often leads to women being marginalized in the workforce,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
Parvathy highlighted the financial struggles faced by survivors, stating, \u201cMany women cannot sustain their families without financial support. It is a harsh reality that many do not comprehend. People crave sensational stories and names but overlook the need for true justice. The humanity of those affected is often disregarded by the law, society, and media.\u201d<\/p>\n
While acknowledging that the WCC lacks the influence of its male-dominated counterpart, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), Parvathy affirmed that the collective would persist in its advocacy for meaningful change. \u201cWe have worked diligently to normalize the importance of Internal Complaints Committees (ICC) on film sets. I’m no longer seeking allies; I want concrete solutions. It is disheartening that issues only become significant when they personally affect individuals. The fact that the report was hidden for over four years while abuses continued illustrates a lack of accountability,\u201d she remarked.<\/p>\n
Ranjith, who previously chaired the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, was taken into custody on March 31 in Thodupuzha, Idukki, following a complaint from a young actress alleging sexual harassment during a film shoot in Fort Kochi. Consequently, he was suspended from the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA).<\/p>\n
In 2024, another actress accused Ranjith of misconduct during an audition in 2009, while a male complainant claimed he was lured to a hotel and sexually assaulted by Ranjith in 2012. This man later filed a police report in Bengaluru. In July 2025, the Karnataka High Court dismissed the criminal case related to the second allegation, and by October of that year, the proceedings for the first case were also terminated.<\/p>\n
Ranjith is recognized as one of the most successful screenwriters and directors in Malayalam cinema, although he has frequently faced criticism for promoting elitist, patriarchal, and misogynistic themes in his films. Over the years, he has been involved in numerous controversies.<\/p>\n
Some of his most notable works include the screenplays for films like Peruvannapurathe Visheshangal, Johnnie Walker, Devaasuram, Aaraam Thampuran, Summer in Bethlehem, Ustaad, Valyettan, and Narasimham. His directorial projects feature titles such as Ravanaprabhu, Nandanam, Black, Chandrolsavam, Kaiyoppu, Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha, Pranchiyettan and The Saint, and Spirit, among others.<\/p>\n
