Shortly afterward, the Artemis crew surpassed the Apollo 13 distance record, traveling beyond 400,171 kilometers from Earth. The astronauts also reported hues of brown and green on the lunar surface, which could offer insights into the Moon’s mineral makeup and age.<\/p>\n
As they approached the Moon’s far side, at an altitude of just 6,545 kilometers, the familiar lunar visage was eclipsed by an ancient, cratered landscape largely unseen by humans before. Noteworthy features included the expansive Mare Orientale basin\u2014often referred to as the Moon’s “Grand Canyon”\u2014along with the Ohm, Pierazzo, and Glushko craters. One of the mission’s highlights was witnessing a total solar eclipse, which unfolded before them in a way no one on Earth could experience.
