The police in Western Australia are currently probing the discovery of what are suspected to be human bones on Rottnest Island, a well-known tourist destination famed for its quokka population.<\/p>\n
The remains were found amidst construction activities at the site of the Holy Trinity Church on the island.<\/p>\n
Authorities have initiated an investigation, and forensic experts will analyze the bones to establish their age.<\/p>\n
The construction work is part of an upgrade project for the island’s main bus stop, which includes improvements such as a new access road for buses, shelters, enhanced seating, decking, and a new accessible ramp for the Catholic church.<\/p>\n
Rottnest Island, situated 19 kilometers offshore from Fremantle, is recognized for its quokkas, small marsupials resembling wallabies, and is a favored vacation destination.<\/p>\n
Also referred to as Wadjemup, the island boasts pristine white-sand beaches, historical shipwrecks, and tranquil bays where visitors can sunbathe and snorkel.<\/p>\n
However, the island, which spans 11 kilometers in length and 4.5 kilometers in width, has a somber past.<\/p>\n
Records from the state of Western Australia reveal that between 1838 and 1931, approximately 3,700 Aboriginal men and boys were detained there, according to the Rottnest Island Authority.<\/p>\n
Many of those imprisoned were community leaders, cultural custodians, and warriors, and their displacement has had enduring repercussions.<\/p>\n
Conditions for those living on the island were harsh, characterized by overcrowding, insufficient sanitation and nutrition, extreme weather, and both physical and psychological abuse, which contributed to a significant number of fatalities.<\/p>\n
Most of the deceased were interred in unmarked graves throughout the island.<\/p>\n
Following the closure of the prison, one of Australia’s largest Aboriginal burial grounds fell into obscurity, as noted by the island authority.<\/p>\n
