A pet dog has narrowly escaped a crocodile attack in the remote region of Western Australia.<\/p>\n
Milli, a black kelpie, was rescued by her owner after a freshwater crocodile pulled her underwater at Lake Argyle. Following the incident, Milli received veterinary care in Broome and is currently on the mend from her injuries.<\/p>\n
This beloved family pet endured minor injuries after being seized by the crocodile at the lake, situated approximately 70 kilometers south of Kununurra in the Kimberley area.<\/p>\n

Milli sustained puncture wounds to her leg when the crocodile attacked her near the boat ramp. Eyewitness Hamish McAlpine was among a group enjoying swimming and fishing at the lake during the Easter long weekend, accompanied by Milli’s owner, Andrew Morton, and his partner.<\/p>\n
Mr. McAlpine recounted the frightening moment, stating, “I witnessed the dog being pulled into the water and heard her yelp as she was dragged further from the shore.” He described the struggle, saying, “I could feel the crocodile against my leg while trying to help Milli; it was like two football players fighting over the ball.”<\/p>\n
Concerned for Milli’s safety, Mr. McAlpine expressed his apprehension about grappling with the crocodile, fearing it could cause her injury. He noted that Mr. Morton quickly came to assist in rescuing the dog from the water.<\/p>\n Lake Argyle is known to host around 35,000 freshwater crocodiles. While these reptiles are typically smaller and less aggressive than their saltwater relatives, they can still pose a danger when provoked.<\/p>\n After the attack, Mr. Morton reached out to a local veterinarian, who advised him to clean Milli’s wounds to avoid infection. He and his partner later traveled to Broome for additional treatment, where Milli was prescribed antibiotics.<\/p>\n Reflecting on the incident, Mr. Morton remarked, “It wasn’t the most successful fishing trip\u2014no fish caught and my dog got bitten by a crocodile. I’ve certainly had better days.” He acknowledged the potential severity of the situation, stating, “We were fortunate; it could have turned out much worse if she had been in deeper water or if we had been farther away. If it had been a saltwater crocodile, we wouldn\u2019t be having this conversation.”<\/p>\n Mr. Morton explained that the entire ordeal lasted less than a minute, from hearing Milli’s whimper to pulling her from the water. “We were just four meters away when she was grabbed, and we reached her in about ten seconds,” he noted. “The crocodile must have been startled and fled when we charged in.”<\/p>\n Grateful that Milli is recovering, he acknowledged the challenge of keeping her still while her leg heals. The area where the incident occurred falls within Kununurra’s Crocodile Risk Mitigation Zone, which extends from the town’s diversion dam to the Lake Argyle dam wall.<\/p>\n The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) has been informed of the incident but has not yet received a formal report. A spokesperson for the DBCA stated, “We may remove a freshwater crocodile from a Crocodile Risk Mitigation Area if it is deemed a ‘problem crocodile’ that poses an active threat to humans.
