Queensland Rail has announced that commuters will experience an additional four days of track closures due to industrial action protected by unions, which has contributed to delays in service. The affected sections include the Caboolture to Gympie North line, which will now reopen on April 13, while the Bowen Hills to Eagle Junction and Northgate lines will resume service on April 16. The Boggo Road to Banoon line is expected to reopen on May 1.<\/p>\n
Kat Stapleton, the chief executive of Queensland Rail, stated that discussions are ongoing with the unions to finalize new enterprise agreements. This announcement follows the planned track closures initially scheduled from April 3 to April 26, intended for essential maintenance work on various rail projects, including the significant Cross River Rail project in Brisbane.<\/p>\n
The delays were exacerbated by a Fair Work Commission ruling on April 5, which mandated the cessation of industrial action. Consequently, some planned work could not commence until April 6. Last week, approximately 300 services were disrupted on the Ipswich and Cleveland lines due to ongoing disputes between Queensland Rail and train controllers. Additionally, the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) initiated its own industrial action, which the union described as “minor” and claimed would not significantly impact rail services. However, they expressed concerns that the government had informed workers participating in minor actions would not receive any pay.<\/p>\n
Queensland Rail confirmed that the necessary preparatory work could not be carried out as scheduled on Friday, primarily due to the inability to de-energize the overhead powerlines. As a result, the track closures have been extended until April 30, with Caboolture to Gympie North facing an additional day of closure, and the Bowen Hills to Eagle Junction, Northgate, and Boggo Road to Banoon lines facing four extra days of disruption.<\/p>\n
In light of the extended closures, Stapleton reassured commuters that rail replacement bus services would continue to operate during this period. “We recognize the frustration our passengers are experiencing due to these delays, and we share in that frustration,” she stated. “We will ensure that rail replacement buses and regular bus services run as frequently as possible to assist our customers in completing their journeys.”<\/p>\n
The Electrical Trades Union has been approached for further comments regarding the situation. A spokesperson for the Labor opposition indicated that the prolonged rail closures would significantly affect both commuters and freight operators, who are already facing challenges due to rising fuel costs.
