During the ongoing six-day walkout, hospitals have faced challenges in replacing the striking doctors, leaving them short-staffed. This strike marks the second day of what is the longest action in an ongoing dispute over pay and working conditions, and it represents the British Medical Association’s (BMA) 15th strike since March 2023.<\/p>\n
In a letter addressed to NHS management on Monday evening, Mackey expressed concern that the strike could hinder the healthcare system’s recent progress in reducing waiting times and improving patient satisfaction. He stated, “It is quite disappointing that the BMA resident doctors committee has decided to proceed with additional industrial action.” He acknowledged the difficulties faced by staff who are working to cover for their absent colleagues and highlighted the particular challenges hospitals face in managing their schedules after the holiday period.<\/p>\n
Mackey pointed out that the timing of the strike appears designed to maximize disruption, as many medical professionals are unavailable due to the Easter break, complicating efforts to maintain adequate staffing levels. Most schools across England remain closed for the holiday, further straining resources.<\/p>\n
Despite these obstacles, NHS facilities have managed to maintain a significant amount of planned care, striving to ensure that at least 95% of services continue during the strike. Mackey remarked, “While there is still much work ahead, it seems we are in as favorable a position as we could hope for on the first day.” He expressed gratitude to the staff for their efforts in navigating the challenges posed by the strike and maintaining services for patients.<\/p>\n
The BMA’s resident doctors committee initiated the strike on March 25, citing the government’s abrupt changes to the terms of a potential agreement aimed at resolving the dispute. The committee is advocating for a 26% increase in pay over the coming years to restore the full value of their salaries, which have declined in real terms since 2008-09.<\/p>\n
They have accused the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) of failing to honor a previously established agreement to provide substantial pay increases through enhanced “progression pay,” which would have allowed doctors to advance through their pay scales more quickly. The committee walked away from negotiations when it became clear that the DHSC intended to distribute the \u00a3700 million allocation for pay increases over three years, rather than sooner, as the doctors had anticipated.<\/p>\n
