On a seemingly ordinary Wednesday morning nearly a year ago, Sam Williamson feared his swimming career might have come to an end.<\/p>\n
However, this Wednesday evening at the Australian Open swimming championships on the Gold Coast, he confirmed that he had made a triumphant return.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t even realize it was Wednesday today; Nationals have felt like Groundhog Day,” Williamson remarked.<\/p>\n
“But yeah, it’s almost 11 months to the day that I thought my swimming days were over. I’m just ecstatic, probably going to head home and have a little cry.”<\/p>\n
Williamson celebrated his comeback after suffering a severe knee injury, which involved a ruptured patella tendon during training, by clinching a remarkable win in the 50m breaststroke.<\/p>\n
With this victory, he successfully defended the title he earned back in 2025, the last event he participated in before his injury. He completed the race in an impressive 27.14 seconds, fending off the fast-approaching 100m champion Gideon Burnes (27.40 seconds) and the strong performance from Grayson Bell (27.66 seconds).<\/p>\n
“The initial prognosis suggested that, at best, I would return to my previous form in 12 months. We\u2019ve achieved this in just 10 and a half months,” he stated.<\/p>\n
“Eleven months ago, I was lying on my back, clutching my knee, not just wondering if I could swim again but if I would even be able to walk again. So, to come away with another victory feels like a job well done.”<\/p>\n
“I couldn\u2019t have accomplished this without the support of my team, my family, my girlfriend, and our puppy, Alfred. It truly takes a village to achieve this.”<\/p>\n
Given the positive influence of support dogs at events on the Gold Coast, Williamson humorously suggested he might be able to bring Alfred along to future competitions.<\/p>\n
“You\u2019ll need to speak with someone at Swimming Australia about that,” he said with a grin. “But let\u2019s hope we can have Alfred at a swim meet soon.”<\/p>\n
In another highlight of the event, Alex Perkins showcased her versatility by competing in multiple disciplines. After excelling in butterfly events, where she secured victories in both the 50m and 100m, she also participated in freestyle, finishing 5th in the 100m and 4th in the 50m.<\/p>\n
Now, she has added backstroke to her repertoire.<\/p>\n
“The other option was a 200m butterfly, but I’ve had enough of that for a lifetime, so I opted for the 50m,” Perkins shared with ABC Sport poolside.<\/p>\n
Her performance in the 50m backstroke earned her a third gold medal of the meet, demonstrating her remarkable adaptability.<\/p>\n
“Honestly, I don\u2019t train for backstroke; it\u2019s just something fun for me. I think my sprinting helps me finish strong,” she remarked with a smile.<\/p>\n
Perkins\u2019 versatility has earned her a spot in the women\u2019s 4x100m relay training camp, recognizing her freestyle capabilities.<\/p>\n
“Growing up, I always thought I would only be a butterfly swimmer,” she reflected. “But having the chance to compete in freestyle and potentially join those relay teams is incredible. The women\u2019s 4x100m team has such a rich history, and being part of that would be a tremendous honor.”<\/p>\n
She added, “Having other focuses takes the pressure off butterfly swimming. If one aspect isn’t working, I have alternatives.”<\/p>\n
Olympic champion Mollie O’Callaghan demonstrated her dominance in the 200m freestyle, winning with a time of 1:53.69, ahead of Lani Pallister (1:55.66) and New Zealand’s Erika Fairweather (1:55.72).<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m happy with the 1:53,” O’Callaghan commented. “Achieving that during the season is quite challenging. My experiences from previous meets have certainly contributed to this success. The goal now is to push for a personal best in the future.”<\/p>\n
When asked if she aimed to break Ariarne Titmus’s world record of 1:52.23, the 22-year-old was hesitant to set a timeline but expressed her ambition to go under 1:52.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s a significant dream of mine, and I know others share this goal,” O’Callaghan said. “Ultimately, it\u2019s about seeing if I can achieve that. If I get close, I\u2019ll be satisfied because it\u2019s a tough challenge.”<\/p>\n
In the women’s 200m individual medley, Kaylee McKeown faced a tough competition against Jenna Forrester, ultimately winning with a time of 2:09.22.<\/p>\n
“There\u2019s always a bit of anxiety when you haven\u2019t raced in a while,” McKeown admitted. “With past accomplishments, there\u2019s also an expectation that comes with it. While the time wasn\u2019t fast, it\u2019s a starting point.”<\/p>\n
Teenage talents and seasoned competitors alike showed their prowess at the championships. In the 50m breaststroke, 17-year-old Sienna Toohey emerged victorious with a time of 30.39 seconds, narrowly beating Mia O’Leary (30.75 seconds) and fellow 17-year-old Lily Koch (31.25 seconds).<\/p>\n
In the distance events, both Sam Short and Lani Pallister completed an impressive long-distance triple, securing wins in the 1,500m alongside their previous victories in the 800m and 400m events.<\/p>\n
