Following an apology issued by Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge regarding his recent comments at a campaign rally in Kerala, the Gujarat unit of the BJP has raised questions about the timing of this apology, suggesting it was prompted by public backlash and protests.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Kharge expressed remorse after he reportedly labeled the people of Gujarat as “illiterate.” He clarified that he has always respected the people of Gujarat and will continue to do so. In a statement posted on X, Kharge remarked, “Some of my statements during a recent election speech in Kerala have been purposely misinterpreted. Nevertheless, I offer my heartfelt apologies. It was never my intention to offend the sentiments of the people of Gujarat, whom I have always respected highly.”<\/p>\n
Anil Patel, a spokesperson for the Gujarat BJP, addressed the media at the Karnavati BJP Office, alleging that Kharge was acting under the influence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He accused the Congress party of consistently insulting the people of Gujarat and resorting to apologies only after facing backlash from the BJP.<\/p>\n
“Kharge ji seems to be following a script written by Rahul Gandhi. His hostility towards Gujarat is evident in his words. Previously, he referred to Modi ji as a ‘100-headed Ravana’ and described the BJP-RSS as ‘poisonous snakes’ in Assam. He even suggested that these snakes should be eliminated before offering prayers,” Dr. Anil Patel stated. He further criticized both Kharge and Rahul Gandhi for their derogatory remarks about Gujaratis, calling for immediate psychological intervention for them.<\/p>\n
Patel questioned why Kharge did not apologize sooner, asserting that labeling millions of Gujaratis as “illiterate and fools” constitutes a direct attack on their dignity and self-respect. “This is more than mere words; it is an affront to the pride of 6.5 crore Gujaratis. Was it necessary for the situation to escalate before he offered an apology?” he asked.<\/p>\n
He further criticized the Congress party, asking if they harbor any resentment towards the people of Gujarat. “Do they not recognize the hard work, intelligence, and patriotism of Gujaratis? Gujarat has produced great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Dayanand Saraswati, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, and Kanhaiyalal Munshi. Today, under the leadership of Narendrabhai Modi and Amitbhai Shah, India is gaining strength on the global stage, which seems intolerable to the Congress,” Patel added.<\/p>\n
In a separate development, members of the Gujarati community organized a protest outside the Congress office in New Delhi in response to Kharge’s comments. BJP leaders and representatives from Gujarati associations participated in the demonstration, demanding an apology from the Congress leadership.<\/p>\n
Dhaval Patel, a BJP MLA from Vansda in Gujarat, claimed that Kharge’s remarks are indicative of a broader trend of opposition leaders insulting Gujaratis.<\/p>\n
