Residents of Punmu, a remote Aboriginal community in Western Australia, are facing the possibility of having to abandon their homes after a food transport company canceled its delivery scheduled for April. This cancellation stems from the deteriorating condition of the road leading into the community.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, the local shire obtained $5 million in funding aimed at repairing roads damaged by Cyclone Zelia in 2025. However, there are growing concerns that this amount may not be adequate to address the extensive repairs needed.<\/p>\n
Edith Costello, the coordinator for Punmu, expressed that the community might need to relocate if the road remains unrepaired. The community currently has only six weeks’ worth of food supplies left, and no truck drivers are willing to navigate the notoriously damaged roadway to deliver essential goods.<\/p>\n
Punmu is situated 1,300 kilometers northeast of Perth and 800 kilometers east of Karratha, and relies on trucks for bulk deliveries of supplies. Unfortunately, the only access road has sustained significant damage from cyclones and is currently restricted to vehicles with special permits.<\/p>\n
“I can’t get trucks from either direction,” Costello stated. “They can’t use the road until it has been graded, and it isn’t economically feasible for them to attempt the journey.” She underscored that this ongoing issue is reaching a critical point due to the current food shortage, leaving her with limited options.<\/p>\n
In recent weeks, heavy-duty off-road vehicles attempting to traverse the route have suffered severe damage, including cracked axles, ripped-off wheels, and broken air lines. Costello warned, “Without a reasonably maintained road, we are in serious trouble.”<\/p>\n
Costello further emphasized that if the road is not restored, the community might have to relocate to larger regional centers like Port Hedland. “The road is like an artery \u2014 it\u2019s a lifeline,” she noted. “Without it, these communities will cease to exist. They would have to shut down.”<\/p>\n
The Martu people, who inhabit Punmu, were among the last Indigenous groups to come into contact with European settlers before being forcibly moved to missions. In the 1980s, Punmu was established as part of the homelands movement, enabling the Martu people to continue their cultural practices. “They choose to live here to avoid alcohol and violence,” Costello remarked. “It would be heartbreaking if this community could not sustain itself, especially without food and a viable road.”<\/p>\n
She pointed out that airlifting food supplies to the community is not a feasible long-term solution, as approximately 60 pallets of frozen and dry goods are needed for each delivery.<\/p>\n
The Shire of East Pilbara, which oversees the 140-kilometer road, has been tasked with its repair. In January, the shire secured $5.6 million in funding specifically for restoring access to communities most affected by Cyclone Zelia, including Punmu. The state government has subsequently agreed to provide up to $17.9 million for the reconstruction of shire roads damaged by the cyclone.<\/p>\n
Shire President Anthony Middleton opted not to give an interview but stated that teams are making progress with planning and mobilization to repair the road following the receipt of state and federal funding. “We are navigating the practical challenges associated with distance, access, and the movement of equipment across the network,” he added in a statement.<\/p>\n
However, Costello expressed skepticism regarding the sufficiency of the funding, asserting that the road requires more than just basic grading; it needs a complete rebuild due to years of damage. “It needs immediate grading, but long-term repairs will demand more resources and planning,” she stated.<\/p>\n
WA Greens MP Sophie McNeill criticized both the state and federal governments for their failure to take responsibility for the “unbelievable” condition of the road. “Immediate action is necessary before these communities become unsustainable,” she urged. “If food cannot be delivered to Punmu, the community will not survive.”<\/p>\n
McNeill highlighted the stark contrast between the road to Punmu and the well-maintained public roads leading to large mining sites, pointing out the inequities within Australia’s infrastructure system that disproportionately affect Indigenous communities. “We have reached a crisis point,” she concluded.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the federal government stated that the Shire of East Pilbara received nearly $14 million in funding for road upgrades from 2024 to 2029.
