Three of these bulk carriers were owned by Chinese interests, while the other three were Greek-owned.<\/p>\n<p>The seventh ship that passed through was a Chinese-owned oil and chemical tanker; however, its route was uncertain as it seemingly disappeared from tracking systems during its transit, suggesting that its tracking data was either turned off or compromised.<\/p>\n<p>The limited vessel activity in this critical shipping corridor mirrors the trends observed since the conflict began. Reports indicate that Iran has communicated to mediators its intention to cap the number of daily transits through the strait to around twelve as part of the ceasefire agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Some Iranian state media have claimed that the regime has reimposed restrictions on the strait in response to Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon. Conversely, other reports suggest that Iran&#8217;s Revolutionary Guards have provided navigational maps to assist ships in avoiding naval mines in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Even if normal traffic levels in the Strait of Hormuz were reinstated immediately, the global oil and gas supply chains would likely require a significant amount of time to stabilize.<\/p>\n<p>The Strait of Hormuz has been a pivotal focus in negotiations between the US and Iran, with former President Donald Trump previously warning that failure to keep the shipping lane open could lead to severe consequences for global civilization.<\/p>\n<p>Both Iran, the US, and Israel have agreed to a ceasefire, with discussions scheduled to take place in Pakistan starting Saturday. While the specifics of Iran&#8217;s proposed ten-point peace plan have not been disclosed, a summary from Iran&#8217;s Supreme National Security Council included two points related to the Strait of Hormuz:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coordinated passage through the Strait of Hormuz with Iran&#8217;s Armed Forces<\/li>\n<li>Implementation of a safe transit protocol ensuring Iranian control over the strait<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reports, including one from the New York Times, have indicated that the proposal might involve Iran imposing a fee of $2 million per ship, to be shared with Oman, which borders the southern part of the strait.<\/p>\n<p>Since the commencement of hostilities, Iranian attacks and threats against maritime vessels have created significant challenges for navigation in the strait. While some crews have managed to transit with Iranian consent or at their own risk, a vast majority of ships have opted to steer clear of this narrow passage, which typically accommodates around 20% of the world\u2019s oil and liquefied natural gas traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The disruption to global supply chains has been pronounced, and experts suggest that even a return to normal vessel traffic would not be sufficient to restore supplies in a timely manner. June Goh, a senior oil market analyst at Sparta Commodities, emphasized that it may take at least three months to replenish depleted crude stocks in Asian refineries, assuming a consistent flow of crude oil resumes.<\/p>\n<p>Goh remarked, &#8220;We will need to see a constant flow of crude oil before we can begin to talk about readily available products in the market.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maritime Industry Australia CEO Angela Gillham highlighted two primary considerations for ship operators contemplating transit through the strait: the safety of their crews and the availability and cost of insurance. She noted a very low appetite for risking lives, alongside exorbitant insurance premiums that rise significantly in conflict zones. Insurers are often reluctant to provide coverage when active threats are present, particularly following several incidents where Iranian forces have targeted merchant vessels.<\/p>\n<p>According to an Economist Intelligence Unit report, the availability of insurance has been restricted, especially for high-risk voyages, often granted on a case-by-case basis. Tankers are typically valued between $200 million and $300 million, with standard insurance premiums around 0.2 to 0.25 percent of a vessel&#8217;s worth. However, these costs have soared due to the ongoing conflict, with potential premiums hitting as high as 3 percent for transits through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>In extreme scenarios, the insurance cost for a single tanker journey could reach $7 million, as indicated by the EIU.
