Anthony Ashwood, a resident of south-east Queensland, is among many individuals across Australia who are living in vehicles due to homelessness. The high prices of fuel have made it nearly impossible for him to power essential appliances, charge devices, or maintain warmth in his van.<\/p>\n
The rising fuel costs have also negatively affected non-profit organizations, leading to a decline in volunteers, reduced donations, and cutbacks in staff hours.<\/p>\n
In response to the escalating fuel prices, the federal government has introduced various initiatives aimed at alleviating the financial burden on affected individuals and organizations.<\/p>\n
For Ashwood, the fuel in his van serves multiple purposes, including powering his refrigerator, heating, and security systems. Having been homeless since 2021, he transitioned to living in his van 18 months ago, utilizing an inheritance from his father to equip it with storage, a bed, a fridge, and batteries. However, with fuel prices soaring, his budget can no longer sustain the diesel needed to last two weeks.<\/p>\n
“If I run out of diesel, I can’t operate my fridge, which forces me to rely on canned food, severely impacting my health,” shared Ashwood, who receives a disability pension.<\/p>\n
Despite having a small solar panel installed on his van, it is insufficient to meet all his energy needs, leaving him disconnected from the internet for days and unable to reach out to friends, family, or government services. “I just remain stationary. It feels like a dead end until I receive my next payment,” he lamented.<\/p>\n
According to research from Cotality, the median prices for homes and rentals have surged by over 40 percent nationwide in the past five years, contributing to an increase in individuals seeking shelter in their vehicles.<\/p>\n
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reported that nearly 8,000 individuals lived in their vehicles during the last financial year, marking a 17 percent increase from the previous year. Many of these individuals are grappling with the impact of rising fuel costs, with the national average price of unleaded petrol rising by 40 percent in March, as indicated by the Australian Institute of Petroleum.<\/p>\n
Ashwood expressed concern over how the ongoing increase in diesel prices is hindering his chances of securing stable housing. “It makes saving for a home nearly impossible. This van is my life; without affordable diesel, everything becomes a struggle,” he stated.<\/p>\n
In Coonabarabran, Dylan Crawley, a program manager at Mission Australia, has observed that individuals living in their vehicles are often forced to travel significant distances\u2014sometimes up to 100 kilometers\u2014to find suitable parking or access support services. “They are increasingly faced with the dilemma of choosing between filling their fuel tank or purchasing groceries,” he noted.<\/p>\n
Crawley has also noticed a rise in requests for assistance, including fuel and food vouchers, and warned that the repercussions of high fuel prices could linger, even if prices eventually drop. He likened their current struggles to those faced by individuals still recovering from the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We are preparing for long-term challenges for the families we support,” he said.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, those living in vehicles are facing a reduction in available support services. Cassandra Goldie, the chief executive of the Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS), stated that high fuel costs have forced non-profits to lose volunteers and donations and to cut back on operational hours. “This paints a concerning picture for those facing the toughest challenges and the services they depend on,” she remarked.<\/p>\n
In response to these issues, ACOSS has urged the federal government to increase funding for support services to help manage rising costs. The government has responded by allocating an additional $8.5 million to nearly 200 emergency relief providers, equating to approximately $43,400 each.<\/p>\n
“Although conflicts far from Australia, such as the war in Iran, may seem unrelated, their effects are being felt here,” noted Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek. The government has also increased emergency relief funding by 15 percent to assist with necessities like food parcels for families in need. However, ACOSS believes that more needs to be done, advocating for increased social security payments to assist those on low and modest incomes.<\/p>\n
“We need focused cost-of-living measures to support individuals with lower incomes,” Dr. Goldie emphasized, calling for increases to essential income supports like JobSeeker and the Remote Area Allowance, which have already seen significant cost increases.<\/p>\n
Last month, the federal government halved the fuel excise tax on petrol and diesel, reducing costs by 26.3 cents per liter for three months. However, Ashwood estimates that even with this tax reduction, he will still incur an additional expense of about $75 every two weeks.<\/p>\n
“I had hoped to transition from living in my van to a small house or apartment, but that dream now feels unattainable,” Ashwood reflected. “I just wish living expenses were more manageable.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
