Despite concerns from some defence analysts and members of the Coalition regarding the aging Anzac-class frigates\u2019 ability to counter potential Iranian drone and missile threats, Admiral Johnston stated that the navy also operates three modern Hobart-class air warfare destroyers, enhancing its operational capabilities.<\/p>\n
During an interview, Admiral Johnston made it clear that the decision to deploy a warship would not be based solely on capacity but rather on where Australia’s strategic interests lie. In separate developments, Admiral Johnston assured that intelligence collected by an Australian surveillance aircraft in the Middle East is managed in a manner that does not support offensive operations against Iran. The E-7 Wedgetail surveillance plane, which has been operating alongside 85 crew members, has been assisting the United Arab Emirates in protecting against Iranian threats for over four weeks, a mission recently extended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.<\/p>\n
The government has reiterated that the deployment of the Wedgetail is purely defensive and not involved in offensive actions against Iran. Minister Marles clarified that while the data gathered by the Australian aircraft is sent back to a United States-operated joint operations base, it is exclusively utilized for defensive coordination among Gulf nations.<\/p>\n
