The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has officially classified emperor penguins as endangered due to the alarming mass drowning of their chicks, a direct consequence of climate change and the resultant melting of sea ice.<\/p>\n
Emperor penguins depend on “fast” ice\u2014sea ice that is securely anchored to the coastline\u2014for the majority of the year, typically around nine months. This environment is crucial for the hatching and growth of their chicks until they develop waterproof plumage. Adult penguins also need stable ice as they undergo annual molting, which is essential for regrowing their swimming feathers.<\/p>\n
However, rising global temperatures have resulted in historically low levels of Antarctic sea ice since 2016. When this ice breaks up prematurely, entire colonies can be submerged, resulting in the drowning of chicks. Even those penguins that manage to avoid the water risk hypothermia due to their wet feathers.<\/p>\n
In 2022, four out of five known breeding colonies of emperor penguins in the Bellingshausen Sea were lost, leading to the demise of thousands of chicks. Another significant colony in the Weddell Sea experienced a similar collapse in 2016. Researchers have described these events as \u201cgrim\u201d and \u201cextraordinarily distressing.\u201d<\/p>\n
The IUCN’s analysis indicates that the emperor penguin population may decline by 50% by the 2080s due to continued sea ice loss. Currently, the population stands at approximately 595,000 adults, reflecting a 10% decrease from 2009 to 2018.<\/p>\n
As the largest species of penguin, emperor penguins have moved from the \u201cnear threatened\u201d category to being classified as \u201cendangered\u201d in the latest IUCN report.<\/p>\n
The assessment also revealed that the Antarctic fur seal population has halved since 2000, primarily due to a significant decrease in krill, their primary food source. This species has also escalated from a status of least concern to endangered on the IUCN’s list of threatened species.<\/p>\n
Martin Harper, the CEO of BirdLife International, which facilitated the IUCN evaluation, remarked, \u201cThe emperor penguin\u2019s transition to endangered status is a stark reminder that climate change is rapidly exacerbating the extinction crisis.\u201d He emphasized the urgent need for governments to initiate measures to reduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n
Dr. Philip Trathan, a marine ecologist involved in the red list analysis, stated, \u201cThe most pressing threat is human-induced climate change. The early breakup of sea ice is already impacting various penguin colonies across Antarctica, and ongoing changes will continue to disrupt their breeding, feeding, and molting environments. Emperor penguins serve as indicators of our changing climate and the effectiveness of our efforts to manage greenhouse gas emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Peter Fretwell from the British Antarctic Survey, who reported on the 2022 colony collapses, expressed his shock at the situation, stating, \u201cIt\u2019s a grim narrative. It\u2019s difficult to fathom the loss of these adorable chicks in such large numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Barbara Wienecke from the Australian Antarctic Division described the colony collapses as \u201chorrendous\u201d and expressed deep distress over the events.<\/p>\n
Rod Downie, chief advisor for polar and oceans at WWF-UK, warned, \u201cGiven the alarming reduction of Antarctic sea ice we are witnessing, these iconic birds may face extinction by the end of the century unless immediate action is taken. The survival of these extraordinary creatures is in our hands.\u201d<\/p>\n
To combat global warming, the only viable solution is to eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion. WWF is advocating for the emperor penguin to be designated as a \u201cspecially protected species\u201d at the forthcoming Antarctic treaty meeting in Japan next May, which could mitigate other threats to their habitat, such as tourism and shipping activities.<\/p>\n
The IUCN also reported that the population of Antarctic fur seals has decreased by more than half since 1999, with an estimated 944,000 mature seals projected for 2025. This decline is attributed to rising ocean temperatures driving krill to deeper waters, thereby limiting food availability for seals. The krill shortages around South Georgia Island have severely impacted the survival rates of seal pups during their first year.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the IUCN highlighted that the southern elephant seal is now at risk of extinction due to outbreaks of bird flu since 2020, which have affected four out of five major subpopulations, leading to the deaths of over 90% of newborn pups in certain colonies.
