Emperor penguins and Antarctic fur seals are experiencing alarming declines in their populations, primarily due to the adverse effects of climate change on their environments and food resources. As a result, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has designated both species as endangered.<\/p>\n
According to scientists and conservation organizations, immediate action to decrease greenhouse gas emissions is crucial to mitigate risks posed to these endangered species. The IUCN’s recent update to its “Red List of Threatened Species” indicates that both the emperor penguin and the Antarctic fur seal are now classified as “endangered,” reflecting the detrimental impact of human activities on their habitats.<\/p>\n
Dr. Grethel Aguilar, the director general of the IUCN, emphasized that the inclusion of these species in the endangered category serves as a stark reminder of the realities of climate change. Historically, emperor penguins, the largest of the 18 penguin species, were labeled as “near threatened.” However, between 2009 and 2018, their population saw a decline of nearly 10 percent, attributed to the premature melting of sea ice, which can result in chicks freezing or drowning.<\/p>\n
The IUCN projects that ongoing breeding challenges linked to unstable sea ice could lead to a 50 percent reduction in the emperor penguin population by the 2080s. Dr. Philip Trathan, a member of the IUCN’s penguin specialist group, stated, “After evaluating various potential threats, we determined that climate change, driven by human actions, poses the most significant risk to emperor penguins.” He noted that early sea ice break-up in spring is already impacting breeding, feeding, and moulting habitats for these birds across Antarctica.<\/p>\n
In addition to emperor penguins, Antarctic fur seals are facing a similarly dire situation. This species has been elevated from “least concern” to “endangered” on the Red List. The IUCN reports that the population of Antarctic fur seals has halved over the past 26 years, dropping from approximately 2,187,000 mature seals in 1999 to around 944,000 last year. Professor Mary-Anne Lea from the University of Tasmania expressed her concern, stating, “I never anticipated that a species once so abundant would be classified as endangered.” <\/p>\n
The decline in fur seal numbers is largely linked to rising ocean temperatures and diminishing sea ice, which adversely affect the availability of krill, a key food source. Professor Lea explained, “The reduction of ice in the Southern Ocean impacts krill recruitment and population size, as well as their behavior and distribution. Predators like Antarctic fur seals, along with various penguin and seal species, must adapt to this new krill distribution to survive.”<\/p>\n
Southern elephant seals, previously considered “least concern,” have now been classified as “vulnerable” due to threats from the H5 strain of bird flu. The IUCN reports that this disease has decimated up to 90 percent of pups in certain colonies. Instances of mass mortality among elephant seals were documented by Australian scientists during a voyage to Heard Island in the Southern Ocean late last year.<\/p>\n
Conservationists, including representatives from WWF, are calling for urgent climate action to protect vulnerable species like the emperor penguin and the Antarctic fur seal. Emily Grilly, WWF Australia’s oceans conservation manager, stated, “We must shift away from fossil fuels and support global initiatives to stabilize climate change.” Ahead of the upcoming Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting in Japan, she urged nations to recognize emperor penguins and Antarctic fur seals as “specially protected species,” which would afford them greater safeguards against industrial fishing and tourism activities.<\/p>\n
“Without targeted measures to protect these species, their populations will continue to decline, potentially leading to catastrophic outcomes, including extinction,” Grilly warned. “This is a deeply concerning prospect.” The IUCN comprises over 1,400 member organizations, including governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and scientific entities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
