In 2016, the relationship between two neighboring families in Sahaspur, located in the Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh, deteriorated following a tragic incident where two members of one family were murdered. The victims were Tanzeel Ahmed, an officer with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and his wife, Farzana, who were fatally shot while returning home from a wedding. A member of the other family, Raiyyan, was implicated as one of the accused in the case.<\/p>\n
Tanzeel and Farzana were attacked on the night of April 2-3, 2016, as they traveled with their two children. Their vehicle was ambushed near the Talkatora culvert by two men on a motorcycle, resulting in critical injuries to both Tanzeel and Farzana, while the children remained unharmed. Tanzeel was pronounced dead shortly after at a local hospital, and Farzana later succumbed to her injuries at AIIMS in Delhi on April 13.<\/p>\n
The police charged five individuals, including Raiyyan, Jaini, Tanjim, Rizwan, and Muneer, with murder and conspiracy. In 2022, the trial court in Bijnor convicted Raiyyan and Muneer Mehtab, sentencing them both to death, while the other three were acquitted due to insufficient evidence. Muneer passed away in jail six months later, leaving Raiyyan as the sole convicted individual.<\/p>\n
Recently, the Allahabad High Court overturned Raiyyan’s conviction, leading to his acquittal after nearly a decade of imprisonment. Now 29 years old, Raiyyan has been incarcerated in Bareilly jail since his arrest in 2016 and has yet to be released. His father, Saadat Hussain, who is 65, explained that they are currently completing the necessary formalities following the court’s ruling. “The court order needs to be filed officially before he can be released. There are no other pending cases against him,” Hussain stated.<\/p>\n
Sahaspur, a predominantly Muslim area situated approximately 25 kilometers from the Bijnor district headquarters, was once a place of neighborly relations. However, those ties have since frayed following the tragic events. Hussain remarked that he had almost lost hope of his son’s release after years of legal challenges. “I was unfamiliar with the judicial process, making the experience even more daunting. We nearly gave up hope, but I am thankful that justice has been served. I always believed in my son’s innocence, even when it was hard for others to see,” he reflected.<\/p>\n
Hussain, who had spent nearly 17 years working as a foreman in a mechanical company in Saudi Arabia, returned to Bijnor upon his son’s arrest three days after the murders. The subsequent years saw him grappling with police investigations, court hearings, and prison visits, which forced him to abandon his job abroad and seek odd jobs locally to support his family, which includes his elderly parents, wife, and daughter.<\/p>\n
Tragically, Hussain’s father, Maulana Abdul Haq, died three years ago at the age of 103, while his wife, Aisha Khatoon, a retired government school teacher, stepped back from her profession around the same time. Their daughter is now married, and Raiyyan, who was in 10th grade at the time of his arrest, managed to complete his intermediate studies while incarcerated.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on his previous relationship with the victims’ family, Hussain noted that they had been on good terms prior to the incident. “I had attended the same wedding as Tanzeel and shared a meal with him. The way things unfolded is something I still struggle to understand,” he said. Since the incident, communication with Tanzeel’s family has ceased, although they are related through his younger brother’s marriage to Tanzeel’s sister. Hussain firmly denied any claims that Raiyyan had a motive for animosity against Tanzeel due to a past argument, asserting that the police had fabricated the charges against his son.<\/p>\n
However, Tanzeel’s family expressed concerns regarding the acquittal, questioning accountability for the couple’s murders. Haseeb Ahmed, a cousin of Tanzeel, emphasized that the judgment does not clarify who was truly responsible for their deaths, especially given that Tanzeel’s children had identified the accused during the investigation. Now in their twenties, the children are facing uncertainties about their safety following the verdict. “Our main concern is our security; the acquitted individual may pose a danger to us,” Haseeb stated, noting that he has been assigned police protection due to the perceived threat to his life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
