Simultaneously, Iran is likely looking to exploit and widen existing tensions between the US and Israel to create further division between these two allies.<\/p>\n
Marion Messmer, director of the international security program at Chatham House, highlighted that Israel’s strikes on Lebanon reveal broader issues regarding the United States’ ability to manage its relationship with Israel, a key ally in the campaign against Iran. In a briefing, Messmer stated that Israel\u2019s insistence that its military actions are not part of the ceasefire agreement exposes a significant vulnerability and illustrates the limitations of US influence over its allies. The continued bombings in Lebanon could ultimately destabilize the ceasefire and entrap the US in a conflict it aims to resolve.<\/p>\n
Messmer further noted that after weeks of President Trump expressing frustration towards European allies for insufficient support, it now appears that the alliance with Israel poses a greater risk to US interests in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
