London Mayor Sadiq Khan has urged government officials to implement more stringent measures against social media platforms that propagate misinformation, following a report detailing a significant rise in hostile accounts disseminating inaccuracies regarding crime statistics and community integration in London.<\/p>\n
Addressing what he refers to as “the outrage economy” during a disinformation summit in Cambridge, Khan expressed concern that insufficient action could lead to a rise in domestic terrorism, fueled by conspiracy theories circulating online. He has also reached out to social media companies, advocating for necessary changes to combat this issue.<\/p>\n
Khan emphasized that if social media firms continue to disregard the problem, decisive intervention from the central government will be essential, particularly as the media regulator Ofcom appears to lack the capacity to enforce meaningful reform.<\/p>\n
Data from the Greater London Authority’s analysis unit revealed a staggering increase of 150% to 200% in online narratives portraying London as dangerously unsafe over the past two years, alongside a 350% surge in content suggesting that migration negatively affects the city.<\/p>\n
“While we rightly expect greater accountability from tech giants, we cannot solely depend on them,” Khan stated. “If these platforms fail to take responsibility, the government must possess the authority to enforce compliance. Therefore, I will persist in advocating for a more robust governmental stance, both publicly and privately.”<\/p>\n
He proposed the establishment of a new central agency equipped with the flexibility and power necessary to safeguard democracy against misinformation and to address the magnitude and urgency of the crisis. Khan called for stricter enforcement of existing regulations, asserting that without the ability to impose significant penalties, regulators like Ofcom will struggle to compel companies to change their practices.<\/p>\n
A long-time target of Islamophobic and other derogatory social media attacks, particularly during his exchanges with Donald Trump, Khan noted that the volume of mischaracterizations regarding London has escalated. In his speech, he described the city as a “fallen metropolis overrun by Islamist immigrants where crime is rampant and basic decency has eroded.”<\/p>\n
According to the recent study, while some misinformation originates from American sources, additional posts are linked to Russian or Chinese state interests. Moreover, artificial intelligence technology from countries like Vietnam is being used to disseminate false narratives, sometimes masquerading as credible local news outlets.<\/p>\n
Khan remarked that this emerging outrage economy is “undermining the fundamental trust that binds our communities together” and must be directly confronted. He warned, “The same forces targeting London are beginning to set their sights on other cities globally. In a few years, we may reflect on London as a warning sign, but I hope we will also recognize it as the birthplace of resistance against this trend.”<\/p>\n
He cautioned that unchecked misinformation could result in violence and terrorism, citing the case of Kevin Rees, a 63-year-old retiree who became involved in online conspiracy theories after opposing the expansion of London\u2019s ultra-low emission zone. Rees was sentenced to prison in January for detonating a homemade bomb at an enforcement camera, an act that police indicated could have resulted in fatalities.<\/p>\n
Khan clarified that his call for action does not equate to an attempt to stifle free speech. “To those who attempt to trivialize this crisis by framing it as a discussion about unrestricted freedom to post, I say this: consider the charity workers threatened by strangers at their homes after being doxxed online, or the parents struggling to reach their children as they delve deeper into the darkest corners of the internet,” he stated.<\/p>\n
