Ajinkya Rahane expressed his frustration during a recent press conference when questioned about his performance after the Powerplay. Although he scored 41 runs off 24 balls with a strike rate exceeding 170 against the Lucknow Super Giants, this figure falls short when compared to the standards set by opening batsmen from other teams. Following the dismissal of his opening partner Finn Allen, Rahane’s scoring turned into a cycle of rotating the strike, occasionally interrupted by boundaries, a trend echoed by Angkrish Raghuvanshi.<\/p>\n
In the ongoing IPL season, accumulating fewer than 60 runs in the initial six overs is deemed unsatisfactory, and KKR managed just 56 runs, benefitting from a 16-run over bowled by Avesh Khan at the end of the Powerplay.<\/p>\n
Post-Powerplay, the team found their scoring pace to be more consistent than explosive. Rahane attempted to inject some aggression into his innings, at one point losing the grip on his bat as he hit a ball for a boundary at wide third man. This was atypical for him, as most of his runs came from traditional, well-executed shots. However, the current T20 format demands a more dynamic approach.<\/p>\n
After a lackluster start, KKR was in dire need of their record signing, Cameron Green, who was moved down to bat at No. 4. Unfortunately, he exhibited a noticeable lack of urgency early in his innings, managing only 9 runs from his first 14 balls. Green concluded with a total of 32 runs off 24 balls, which was not the impactful contribution KKR expected, especially with more than half the innings already completed. Alarmingly, most of his runs came from edges rather than solid hits. The hefty investment of Rs 25.2 crore during the auction is not being justified, as evidenced by his previous scores of 18, 2, and 4. Without Rovman Powell\u2019s quickfire 39 runs off 24 balls, KKR would have struggled to reach 181 runs.<\/p>\n
The franchise faces a critical decision if they hope to remain competitive in this IPL season. They must either revise their playing strategy or consider changes to their lineup.
