In Philadelphia, a partial collapse of a seven-story parking garage that was under construction has resulted in one fatality, with two individuals still missing, as confirmed by city officials.<\/p>\n
Efforts are currently underway to locate the two missing persons following the incident that occurred on Wednesday, which Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker described as a “complex process” due to the precarious nature of the remaining structure.<\/p>\n
“We are committed to ensuring that everyone affected by this tragedy is located,” Mayor Parker stated during a press conference on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n
According to Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Jeffrey Thompson, three individuals were rescued from the site. One of them suffered critical injuries and later succumbed at a local hospital, while the other two received treatment and have since been discharged.<\/p>\n
The collapse took place around 2:17 p.m. on Wednesday, as detailed by Mayor Parker. A subcontractor was engaged in the installation of precast concrete floor decking and roof segments at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n
“Following the placement of a precast roof segment, it failed and fell to the floor below, which initiated a progressive collapse across all seven levels,” Parker explained.<\/p>\n
Thompson mentioned that engineers and other professionals are currently assessing the structure to facilitate a safe search and rescue operation.<\/p>\n
“We will meticulously examine every section of the affected building to ensure that all individuals are accounted for,” he stated, adding that this operation will require time due to the situation.<\/p>\n
“The stability of this building has been compromised. It requires stabilization,” he emphasized. “We must carefully dismantle parts of the structure to protect both the construction personnel and the first responders involved in the ongoing search.” <\/p>\n
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia owns the parking garage, and the construction project is managed by a contractor located in Exton, Pennsylvania, as noted by Mayor Parker.<\/p>\n
“Our primary focus is on the safety of the construction workers, and we are collaborating closely with the City of Philadelphia and our construction partners,” the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia stated in a press release.<\/p>\n
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed that his administration is providing “full support to those on the ground as they continue rescue operations and assist the families affected.” <\/p>\n
All eight required construction permits were issued appropriately, and inspections were current, according to Parker.<\/p>\n
