Starting today, Australians journeying to Europe will undergo face and fingerprint scans at the borders of 29 countries. This initiative is part of the European Union’s new Entry\/Exit System (EES), which has been implemented amidst ongoing disruptions in global air travel due to conflicts in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
Travel professionals have cautioned that the introduction of the EES may result in increased wait times at airports and land crossings as the system is fully activated. Under this new biometric system, traditional passport stamping will be replaced by the collection of biometric data across nearly 30 nations within the Schengen Zone, which includes popular destinations such as France, Italy, and Spain. In addition to biometric scans, travelers may also be asked to provide information about their visit’s purpose.<\/p>\n
The implementation of these measures coincides with significant disruptions in air travel linked to Middle Eastern conflicts, leading to the cancellation of thousands of flights and creating uncertainty for travelers worldwide. Since the phased rollout of the EES began last year, over 25,000 individuals have been denied entry into European countries due to expired or counterfeit documentation or an inability to justify their travel intentions, according to the European Commission.<\/p>\n
Professor Mary Crock, a migration law specialist at the University of Sydney, noted that this development reflects a global trend towards enhanced monitoring of international travelers, particularly given the current geopolitical instability. “The necessity of understanding who is traveling where has never been more crucial,” she remarked. She highlighted that Australians are already accustomed to biometric checks in countries like the United States, while Europe is still adapting to these technologies.<\/p>\n
However, the scale of data sharing and centralization among European nations is unprecedented. Professor Crock explained that unlike a single government overseeing the process, the EES involves collaboration among multiple countries, which can vary significantly in their technological capabilities, although the overall need for monitoring remains consistent.<\/p>\n
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has advised travelers to anticipate longer lines at airports and land borders as the EES becomes operational. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), representing numerous global airlines, expressed concerns about potential delays during the busy summer travel season, citing a disconnect between the perceived effectiveness of the EES and the reality faced by non-EU travelers.<\/p>\n
In addition to the EES, Europe plans to implement another border security measure later this year. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will require travelers from visa-exempt nations, including Australians, to obtain authorization prior to departure, similar to Australia’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).<\/p>\n
Professor Crock characterized these new systems as beneficial rather than alarming for travelers. “In light of the dangers associated with conflicts in the Middle East, it is prudent to enhance monitoring of movement,” she stated.<\/p>\n
The EES is designed to modernize border control within the Schengen area by replacing traditional passport stamping with a digital system that captures a traveler\u2019s photograph, fingerprints, and passport information upon entry or exit. The European Commission anticipates that the EES will be fully functional across all 29 participating countries by April 10, 2026. Most non-EU individuals, including Australians visiting for short periods of up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe, will be required to utilize the EES. Children under the age of 12 will only need a facial scan, while Irish passport holders and certain EU residents will be exempt from these requirements.<\/p>\n
Upon arrival and departure, travelers will need to present their passport, undergo biometric scanning, and possibly respond to questions regarding their accommodation or the purpose of their visit. Returning visitors can expect a quicker biometric check.<\/p>\n
Travel experts recommend allowing extra time for border checks, as the EES may lengthen the overall process. The countries participating in the EES include all 29 Schengen\/EU nations such as Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden, among others. Cyprus and Ireland will continue to use manual passport stamping.<\/p>\n
Travelers connecting through a Schengen airport will complete EES checks at their initial point of entry into the area, providing their passport and undergoing biometric checks. Internal flights between Schengen countries typically do not require further checks.
