Chico Slimani, a notable former contestant on The X Factor, was convicted of drink-driving on Thursday, explaining to the court that his arrest occurred shortly after he had relapsed from his sobriety.<\/p>\n
The 55-year-old singer, whose birth name is Yousseph Slimani, achieved fame by reaching the quarter-finals of the popular talent competition in 2005, and he later topped the charts with his hit single, “It\u2019s Chico Time.”<\/p>\n
During proceedings at Willesden Magistrates’ Court, Slimani revealed that he had consumed whisky over a six-hour period following the death of his third close friend from cancer. Additionally, he had taken NyQuil, a cold and flu medication, which he claimed was intended to treat what he referred to as a lingering case of Covid.<\/p>\n
Police stopped him around 6:30 PM on December 13 in Southgate, located in North London. Slimani explained the context of his actions, stating, \u201cIt was after a third bereavement of one of my dearest friends, which was just devastating. On that fateful day \u2013 I\u2019m teetotal, I don\u2019t drink \u2013 and it felt like I was going out of my mind, I couldn\u2019t take it, so I drank,\u201d as reported by PA Media. He assured the court that he has not consumed alcohol since the incident.<\/p>\n
As a consequence of his actions, Slimani received a 12-month driving ban and a fine. The court noted his financial difficulties, which had resulted in pending county court actions against him.<\/p>\n
District Judge Mark Jabbitt imposed a \u00a3600 fine along with court costs and recommended Slimani for a rehabilitation program for drink-drivers. While the judge expressed sympathy regarding Slimani\u2019s personal losses, he emphasized that he could not condone excessive drinking or the use of medication without understanding its potential effects on driving.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on the situation, Slimani stated, \u201cWhen I got to the police station, all I could think of was the implications of me being arrested for something that goes completely against what I am and what I do,\u201d highlighting both his commitment to sobriety and his involvement in charitable activities.
