Recent geotechnical assessments on the Great Western Highway have revealed substantial structural deficiencies beneath the roadway. This vital connection between Sydney and Western New South Wales was anticipated to reopen after a three-month closure, but the state’s roads minister has indicated that there is currently no definitive timeline for its reopening.<\/p>\n
The New South Wales government is actively seeking international expertise to aid in the repair efforts. Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison stated that with experts being brought in to evaluate the situation, a clear schedule for the highway’s reopening remains elusive.<\/p>\n
The section of the highway at Victoria Pass has been closed since March due to the discovery of cracks in the historic Mitchell’s Causeway, which has been in place for over 200 years. As a result, more than 12,000 vehicles daily have been rerouted through central Lithgow and along the Bells Line of Road to navigate the Blue Mountains.<\/p>\n
Geotechnical studies of the affected area were completed two weeks later than originally planned. Minister Aitchison noted, “The fill material under the road has significantly degraded, leading to voids and gaps within the causeway’s structure.”<\/p>\n
During a technical briefing scheduled for April 23, the government plans to gather specialists from both Australia and abroad to expedite the restoration process. “We are collaborating with global experts to determine how we can reestablish access,” Aitchison explained.<\/p>\n
While the initial closure was projected to last for three months, Aitchison acknowledged that this estimate may need to be revised. “Without a clear solution, we cannot provide a definitive reopening schedule,” she remarked. “However, it\u2019s crucial that we now possess the geotechnical data to move forward effectively.” She assured the public that they are aiming to expedite the procurement process, though it will require time to implement.<\/p>\n
According to Aitchison, “Proactive monitoring” that began in December helped avert a potentially severe situation.<\/p>\n
The ongoing closure of the Great Western Highway has significantly increased travel times across the Blue Mountains and through Lithgow. Ramsay Moody, president of the Hartley District Progress Association, expressed concern for the community’s hardships. “Any delays are troubling. Three months is a long time to wait, and these ongoing delays suggest the timeline may extend,” he stated. “The impact is extensive on residents and local businesses.” Moody highlighted that parents are facing longer commutes for their children, extending daily travel by over an hour. Additionally, local businesses are struggling due to being bypassed entirely, leading to substantial financial strain.<\/p>\n
Aitchison conveyed her understanding of the difficulties faced by those affected and noted that the NSW government is providing additional bus and train services across the Blue Mountains.<\/p>\n
A survey conducted by Business NSW, the state’s leading business organization, underscored the highway’s closure’s economic repercussions. Over half of the 300 businesses surveyed in Central West reported cost increases of up to 30%, attributing this to declining revenue, supply chain disruptions, high fuel prices, and reduced customer footfall. Vicki Seccombe, the western regional director for Business NSW, stated that 98% of the participating businesses indicated they were feeling the effects of the closure. “This situation is particularly concerning for small to medium-sized businesses that rely on visitors, as well as for sectors like manufacturing, construction, and agriculture that struggle to absorb these rising costs,” she noted.<\/p>\n
