On Easter Sunday morning, law enforcement officials in Northern California conducted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Suburban, suspecting a registration issue, and uncovered a horrifying crime scene that led to the discovery of two homicide victims.<\/p>\n
According to a statement from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), both the driver and a passenger of the vehicle were taken into custody in connection with the murders. The passenger attempted to escape when officers stopped the SUV in Clearlake, located approximately 100 miles northeast of San Francisco, but was apprehended shortly thereafter, as reported by the CHP.<\/p>\n
During the traffic stop, officers noticed significant amounts of blood inside the vehicle, as revealed by John Pinoli, the chief of CHP’s northern division, during a press briefing on Wednesday. They found an unresponsive male in the rear passenger area, who was later declared dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
In addition to the body, officers located a firearm near the area where the passenger had tried to flee, and further investigation led to the discovery of another victim, a woman found deceased down an embankment several miles away.<\/p>\n
“What began as a standard traffic stop quickly escalated into an intricate investigation,” Pinoli stated.<\/p>\n
The suspects have been identified as 37-year-old Alex Kenneth Schussolin and 32-year-old Jasslynn Pearl Critchett, both residents of Clearlake. Authorities believe the events originated in Sonoma County before progressing to Lake County, where the suspects were ultimately stopped. They are facing charges that include murder and carjacking, among others.<\/p>\n
The Lake County sheriff\u2019s office and district attorney confirmed the identities of the victims to the media as Desiree Fuentes and Terry Harris, both from Sonoma County.<\/p>\n
In a GoFundMe campaign, Fuentes\u2019s daughter shared that her mother was expected to join the family for Easter activities, specifically dyeing eggs, but she never arrived, and her children were unable to contact her. Her daughter described Fuentes as a “sweet social butterfly” who was “loved by everyone.”<\/p>\n
As of now, authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the murders. Lake County District Attorney Susan Krones informed Lake County News that investigators believe the victims and the suspects met for the first time on the day of the incident, and there are no known prior connections between them.<\/p>\n
Krones also noted that Fuentes and Harris were in “legal possession” of the Suburban driven by Critchett and Schussolin at the time of the CHP stop. If convicted, the suspects face serious consequences.<\/p>\n
