The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) declared on Friday its decision to end its partnership with the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), led by suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir, and will participate in the forthcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal as an independent entity.<\/p>\n
This announcement follows a press conference held by the TMC, where allegations were made against Kabir, claiming that he sought \u20b91,000 crore from the BJP to assist in destabilizing the Mamata Banerjee administration, referencing a video that circulated online.<\/p>\n
Just over a week ago, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and Kabir had conducted a joint rally in Murshidabad, where Owaisi expressed his belief that the collaboration with AJUP would persist beyond the Assembly elections into the 2026 Lok Sabha elections.<\/p>\n
The video, allegedly featuring Kabir, has ignited a political controversy in West Bengal, with claims that he discussed efforts to undermine Banerjee’s leadership with BJP backing.<\/p>\n
AIMIM addressed the situation on its X account, stating, \u201cHumayun Kabir\u2019s comments have highlighted the precarious situation of Muslims in Bengal. AIMIM cannot align itself with statements that compromise the integrity of the Muslim community.\u201d<\/p>\n
The post continued, \u201cEffective immediately, AIMIM is severing its ties with Kabir\u2019s party. Muslims in Bengal represent one of the most impoverished and marginalized groups, and despite years of secular governance, their needs have been overlooked. AIMIM is committed to ensuring that marginalized communities have a distinct political voice in elections.\u201d<\/p>\n
AIMIM further emphasized, \u201cWe will be running in the Bengal elections independently and will not form alliances with any other parties moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
The AIMIM is set to contest in 11 Assembly constituencies across West Bengal.<\/p>\n
In an interview with The Indian Express, Imran Solanki, the AIMIM president for Bengal, remarked, \u201cOur party has resolved to end the alliance with Humayun Kabir\u2019s AJUP. We will now operate independently in Bengal and aim for victory. We have submitted candidates for nine seats in the first phase and two in the second phase.\u201d<\/p>\n
A planned joint public meeting in Bhagabangola, Murshidabad, between the two parties has been canceled. Solanki stated, \u201cThere will be no joint rally. We will campaign independently and secure seats. Our leader, Asaduddin Owaisi, will visit Bengal to support our campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n
AIMIM has announced candidates for the first phase of elections in areas including Raghunathganj, Kandi, Lalgola, Suti, Nalhati, Muraroi, Sujapur, Mothabari, and Asansol Uttar, which are scheduled to vote on April 23. Additionally, candidates have been named for the Bashirhat Uttar and Habra Assembly seats, which will see polling in the second phase on April 29.<\/p>\n
