Magyar’s rapid ascent and the rise of his Tisza party have surprised many observers. While some commend the impressive movement he has cultivated and his remarkable dedication, which includes delivering up to six speeches daily across the country, others criticize his occasionally volatile temperament and brusque demeanor.<\/p>\n
Some view him as the ideal leader for this critical juncture. Tam\u00e1s Topol\u00e1nszky, a filmmaker who has spent the last 18 months documenting Magyar for a film about the broader societal changes in Hungary, stated, “Like all politicians, he can be challenging, but he is also genuine and passionate. His impatience may be necessary to drive us forward.”<\/p>\n
Topol\u00e1nszky followed Magyar as he traveled to various villages and towns in Hungary, revitalizing engagement in a political landscape that had long been marked by apathy. “The energy at these rallies was unprecedented,” he observed.<\/p>\n
Adding complexity to Magyar’s rise is his history with Orb\u00e1n’s Fidesz party, where he spent a significant portion of his life mingling with its elite members. He has had close ties with influential figures, including Gergely Guly\u00e1s, Orb\u00e1n’s chief of staff, and in 2006 he married Judit Varga, a former justice minister affiliated with Fidesz. His career also included serving as a Hungarian diplomat in Brussels and holding prominent roles within government agencies.<\/p>\n
Magyar gained widespread attention in 2024 when it was revealed that Orb\u00e1n’s administration, known for its commitment to safeguarding Christian families and children, had pardoned an individual involved in a cover-up of a sexual abuse scandal at a children’s home. Varga, by then Magyar’s ex-wife, resigned alongside Hungary’s president, Katalin Nov\u00e1k.<\/p>\n

She felt there were no alternatives, given the rampant corruption that has left Hungary as the most corrupt nation in the EU, compromising public services and burdening citizens like her. “Anything is better than this quiet death,” she stated.<\/p>\n
Topol\u00e1nszky believes Magyar’s unique background enhances his relatability in a country where government influence permeates local politics, culture, and academia, often silencing dissent. “He is an insider who has sacrificed everything \u2014 all the advantages \u2014 by breaking away from Fidesz,” the filmmaker noted.<\/p>\n
Despite two years of campaigning and a comprehensive 240-page electoral manifesto, the specifics of Magyar’s plans remain unclear. This ambiguity appears intentional; he has maintained a focused campaign to avoid providing ammunition for the approximately 80% of Hungary’s media that is loyal to Fidesz.<\/p>\n
Gy\u0151ri described Magyar as a “dark horse,” adding, “We know little about him.” Aside from his promise to adopt a more stringent approach to migration than Orb\u00e1n by abolishing the guest worker program, Magyar has pledged to eliminate many controversial aspects of Orb\u00e1n’s policies.<\/p>\n
