Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), was present at the meeting, accompanied by members of the Governing Board, the Monetary Policy Board, and several senior officials. This gathering is part of the Central Bank’s statutory obligation to present updates to Parliament every four months.<\/p>\n
Deputy Ministers Chathuranga Abeysinghe, Dr. Kaushalya Ariyarathnea, Nishantha Jayaweera, as well as Members of Parliament including Rauff Hakeem, Ravi Karunanayake, M.K.M. Aslam, Nimal Palihena, Chithral Fernando, Wijesiri Basnayake, Thilina Samarakoon, Champika Hettiarachchi, and Lakmali Hemachandra, who is also an attorney, attended the session.<\/p>\n
During the discussions, the Committee prioritized the allegations of fraud involving NDB Bank. They initiated a thorough dialogue with the Central Bank, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the pressing need for immediate action.<\/p>\n
The Governor informed the Committee that an initial investigation into the matter is currently in progress. He assured members that the Central Bank would provide updates to the Committee as soon as adequate information is available.<\/p>\n
The Committee expressed deep concern over significant lapses in corporate governance at the bank, inadequate supervision by the relevant departments of the CBSL, and delays in reporting critical information.<\/p>\n
Emphasizing the unacceptability of these deficiencies, the Committee mandated that prompt corrective actions be implemented. They further reiterated their commitment to closely monitor the situation and enforce strict oversight to uphold accountability, transparency, and public trust in the financial system.<\/p>\n
