As of Friday night, the number of individuals who have successfully journeyed to the moon and returned to Earth will increase to 28, thanks to NASA’s Orion capsule, which is set to make a Pacific Ocean splashdown with four Artemis II astronauts aboard, using three large parachutes for a gentle landing.<\/p>\n
The landing is scheduled for 5:07 PM PT (1:07 AM BST on Saturday) near San Diego, concluding a 10-day lunar mission. This voyage marks a historic moment, as the three American astronauts and one Canadian astronaut become the first humans to venture beyond low Earth orbit since the Apollo program\u2019s last mission in December 1972.<\/p>\n
This mission also signifies a fresh chapter for NASA and its international collaborators following a successful test flight that circled the far side of the moon, achieving all its planned objectives.<\/p>\n
NASA has demonstrated its capability to safely transport humans to and from cislunar space\u2014the region between Earth and the moon\u2014and plans to leverage the insights gained from this mission to advance the Artemis program, aiming for a manned moon landing by 2028, which would occur 56 years after the last such event.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, people around the globe have shared in a collective experience over the past week and a half, marveling at stunning video and high-resolution images of the moon and Earth, coupled with heartfelt reflections from the astronauts on their experiences.<\/p>\n
“I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the moon,” remarked NASA astronaut Christina Koch, reflecting on her initial views of the lunar landscape from 4,067 miles (6,545 km) away. “For a fleeting moment, it felt so real and profound.” She emphasized the uniqueness of the moon and how viewing it in relation to Earth highlights our shared existence and the miraculous resources our planet provides.<\/p>\n
Koch made history as the first woman to travel to the moon and back, while Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency became the first non-American to achieve this feat. Victor Glover, serving as the Artemis II pilot, is recognized as the first person of color to venture on this journey.<\/p>\n
Together with mission commander Reid Wiseman, the four astronauts traveled farther from Earth than any humans before them, reaching a distance of 252,756 miles\u2014over 4,000 miles beyond the previous record set by the Apollo 13 crew in April 1970.<\/p>\n
However, their journey was not without challenges. The Orion capsule, comparable in size to a small camper, experienced issues with its toilet system, requiring the astronauts to use urine collection bags and perform in-flight repairs conducted by Koch, who took on the role of plumber.<\/p>\n
Despite the difficulties, the crew also enjoyed lighter moments, such as a scavenger hunt for dehydrated scrambled eggs on Easter Sunday, and the presence of Rise, a plush mascot designed by an eight-year-old student, who frequently appeared during press conferences.<\/p>\n
A particularly emotional moment occurred when the crew chose to honor Carroll Taylor Wiseman, the late wife of the mission commander, by proposing to name an unnamed moon crater after her. Hansen struggled to express the sentiment, leading to tears and embraces among the crew.<\/p>\n
During the more technical aspects of the mission, the astronauts assessed various systems within Orion, including life support, radiation detectors, and next-generation spacesuits, all of which are vital for future deep-space endeavors and NASA’s long-term plans for the Artemis initiative, which includes a proposed $20 billion lunar base to be established within ten years.<\/p>\n
The imminent splashdown of this returning moon crew, the first in over five decades, represents a significant milestone for NASA. While not as visually striking as the launch on April 1 from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, the landing nonetheless required meticulous planning and precise execution.<\/p>\n
Adjustments made to the heat shield following challenges during the uncrewed Artemis I mission in November 2022 gave NASA confidence in Orion’s ability to endure temperatures reaching 5,000\u00b0F (2,760\u00b0C) during its 25,000 mph re-entry. Mission managers opted for a steeper re-entry trajectory to mitigate heat stress.<\/p>\n
The deployment of Orion\u2019s eleven parachutes at various altitudes was strategically timed to slow the spacecraft from 325 mph to 130 mph, before the three primary parachutes, with a combined canopy span of 80 yards (73 meters), deployed to bring it down to a gentle 17 mph for splashdown.<\/p>\n
Nasa and Coast Guard recovery teams are prepared to cover a vast landing area of approximately 550 miles in diameter. After completing medical evaluations and a brief stop at a military base in San Diego, the crew will head to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, where they will reunite with their families, having last seen them on March 27.<\/p>\n
The four astronauts will join the ranks of only 24 other astronauts, all American males, who have journeyed to the moon and back during nine Apollo missions conducted from December 1968 to December 1972.<\/p>\n
