This week, human skeletal remains were unearthed on Rottnest Island, a well-known tourist attraction that previously served as a notorious correctional facility. Authorities from Western Australia have indicated that these bones are likely to be of historic Indigenous origin.<\/p>\n
The investigation into the remains commenced on Wednesday after they were discovered during construction activities at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. In addition to law enforcement, the state anthropologist is also participating in the inquiry.<\/p>\n
A representative from WA Police stated, “Expert analysis suggests that the remains are of historical significance and align with Indigenous ancestry.”<\/p>\n
Authorities confirmed that there were no indications of foul play related to the discovery.<\/p>\n
Located 19 kilometers off the coast of Fremantle, Rottnest Island is famed for its white sandy beaches, wrecked ships, and tranquil coves, as well as being home to the quokka, a small wallaby-like marsupial.<\/p>\n
However, the island, also known by its Indigenous name Wadjemup, harbors a troubling past.<\/p>\n
According to records from the state of Western Australia, between 1838 and 1931, approximately 3,700 Aboriginal men and boys were incarcerated there, as reported by the Rottnest Island Authority. Many of those imprisoned were prominent figures within their communities, including leaders and warriors, and their forced removal had enduring repercussions.<\/p>\n
Conditions within the prison were harsh, characterized by overcrowding, inadequate sanitation and nutrition, severe weather conditions, and both physical and psychological abuse, all of which contributed to a significant number of deaths.<\/p>\n
Most of the deceased were laid to rest in unmarked graves across the island.<\/p>\n
After the prison’s closure, one of Australia’s largest Indigenous burial sites became largely overlooked, according to the island authority.<\/p>\n
Subsequently, the island transitioned into a vacation destination, with the area housing the burial ground repurposed as a budget camping facility known as Tentland.<\/p>\n
In light of the recent discovery, WA Police have referred the case to the Whadjuk Aboriginal Corporation and the Rottnest Island Authority for further action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
