The pro-Palestine event, commemorating Nakba Day\u2014the mass displacement of Palestinians\u2014has had its requested route through central London denied by the Metropolitan Police. In contrast, the \u201cUnite the Kingdom\u201d demonstration will proceed through various key locations, including Kingsway, the Strand, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, and Parliament Square. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, proclaimed on social media: \u201cLondon is ours on May 16th.\u201d<\/p>\n
An open letter has been signed by various artists and public figures, including actors Samuel West and Khalid Abdalla, musicians Billy Bragg and Nadine Shah, alongside members of Parliament, academia, legal professionals, trade unionists, and civil society leaders. The letter states that the Met must not prioritize the far-right over the pro-Palestine movement. The police have justified their decision based on the expected scale of the respective protests.<\/p>\n
Billy Howle, known for his roles in \u201cThe Perfect Couple\u201d and \u201cThe Serpent,\u201d also endorsed the letter, expressing that the police’s decision to favor the far-right rally while obstructing a significant annual commemoration is deeply concerning. He insists that this decision should be reversed.<\/p>\n
The letter asserts that the pro-Palestine movement had notified the police of its intention to march on the nearest Saturday to Nakba Day as early as December 18, adhering to a long-standing tradition. However, it criticizes the Metropolitan Police for allowing a hate rally led by the controversial figure Tommy Robinson to dominate the political center of London. The signatories call for an immediate retraction of what they describe as a disgraceful decision.<\/p>\n
The specific route for the Nakba march remains undecided, and organizers are worried about potential risks posed by far-right participants, who the letter claims have previously engaged in both verbal and physical aggression against pro-Palestinian activists and law enforcement.<\/p>\n
The Metropolitan Police’s decisions regarding these marches come amid allegations of escalating repression against pro-Palestine demonstrations. Authorities have previously imposed restrictions on routes and timings, and in December, both the Met and Greater Manchester Police announced intentions to arrest individuals chanting \u201cglobalise the intifada\u201d or carrying related placards, citing concerns from Jewish communities. Pro-Palestinian advocates argue that \u201cintifada\u201d signifies resistance rather than a call for violence.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, over 30 MPs, led by Labour’s Andy McDonald and Kim Johnson\u2014who also signed the letter to the Met\u2014introduced a motion to oppose the government’s suggestion that police consider the \u201ccumulative impact\u201d of repeated protests in the same area when setting conditions for future demonstrations, a measure prompted by pro-Palestine events.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated that their decisions regarding demonstrations are based on safety and security, not political affiliations. They indicated that it was reasonable to expect substantial attendance at the far-right event, referencing the turnout at previous events organized by the same group. They also noted that central London has limited roadways that can accommodate large crowds, with Whitehall being deemed the most appropriate venue.<\/p>\n
The Met expressed willingness to engage with the organizers of the Nakba Day protest to determine an alternative location.<\/p>\n
In a separate announcement, the Metropolitan Police indicated they anticipate \u201ccriminal offences\u201d during the upcoming Defend Our Juries demonstration in Trafalgar Square, which opposes the proscription of Palestine Action. The High Court deemed the ban unlawful in February, prompting the Met to halt arrests related to alleged support for the group.
