A group of over a dozen individuals who have survived abuse by Jeffrey Epstein has criticized Melania Trump for allegedly “shifting the burden” onto them following her call for Congress to conduct public hearings with Epstein’s victims.<\/p>\n
In a collective statement, the group, which includes 13 survivors and the siblings of the late Virginia Giuffre\u2014one of Epstein’s most prominent accusers\u2014expressed that these survivors have already demonstrated significant bravery by coming forward to share their experiences and provide testimony. They contended that demanding more from them at this stage is not a quest for justice but rather a diversion from accountability.<\/p>\n
Their remarks followed a surprising statement from the First Lady, in which she distanced herself from Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. She asserted that she had no personal ties to Epstein, claimed she was not a victim of his actions, and denied that Epstein had introduced her to her husband, Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Melania Trump stated, “The lies connecting me to the disgraced Jeffrey Epstein must end today,” emphasizing that various false images and statements about her relationship with Epstein have circulated on social media for years.<\/p>\n
The exact reasons behind her comments remain unclear. However, her senior adviser, Marc Beckman, informed Reuters that she felt it was time to address the lies surrounding her. During her address, she also highlighted the need for Congress to conduct public hearings and gather sworn testimonies from Epstein’s victims.<\/p>\n
In their Thursday evening statement, the group of Epstein survivors accused the First Lady of placing additional burdens on victims within a politically charged environment that tends to shield those in positions of power, including the Department of Justice and the Trump administration, which has not fully complied with the Epstein Files Transparency Act.<\/p>\n
The survivors further pointed out that this situation diverts focus from Pam Bondi, who is under scrutiny for withholding files and compromising the identities of survivors. They asserted that such inactions continue to jeopardize lives while protecting those who enabled Epstein’s crimes.<\/p>\n
\u201cSurvivors have fulfilled their role,\u201d the group concluded, emphasizing that it is now time for those in power to take responsibility for their actions.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week, the Department of Justice announced that Bondi would not comply with a subpoena to appear before the House oversight committee regarding the handling of the Epstein investigation and the release of relevant files.<\/p>\n
In a separate statement on Thursday, two survivors, Maria and Annie Farmer, shared their desire for accountability, transparency, and justice. They noted that the federal government has mishandled the Epstein investigation and has repeatedly ignored survivors while failing to release numerous records held by the Department of Justice, including their complete FBI records since 1996. \u201cIf the federal government genuinely supports survivors, it should consult us about our needs and pursue the truth wherever it leads,\u201d they urged.<\/p>\n
The White House has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding the survivors’ statements.<\/p>\n
Marina Lacerda, one of the survivors who signed the group statement, took to social media to question the purpose of testifying under oath before Congress, expressing doubt about whether it would lead to any meaningful accountability. \u201cWe had the transparency act passed, we had the files released, we\u2019ve got names in the files, yet no action has been taken,\u201d she lamented. \u201cNow, they want to re-traumatize us by asking us to repeat our stories in front of Congress, only to do nothing afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lisa Phillips, another survivor, commented on the First Lady’s statements, suggesting that Melania Trump was attempting to clarify her image to the public by distancing herself from her husband. When discussing the proposed congressional hearings, Phillips acknowledged the concerns of her fellow survivors but challenged the First Lady to demonstrate genuine commitment to justice. “What\u2019s next? Show us what you can do,” she stated.<\/p>\n
When asked if she would welcome communication from the First Lady regarding the next steps in the pursuit of justice for survivors, Phillips affirmed, \u201cWouldn\u2019t that be the logical next step?
