The government of Maharashtra has mandated a physical verification of student enrollment in state-run schools, which has sparked significant backlash from educators. They question the necessity of this initiative given that over 95 percent of student records are already linked to Aadhaar.<\/p>\n
This verification process, set to commence on Saturday, aims to ensure that the official enrollment figures correspond with actual student attendance in schools.<\/p>\n
The primary goal of this physical verification is to eliminate fraudulent entries, thereby safeguarding government funds allocated for various programs, including midday meals and uniforms.<\/p>\n
According to the directive from the state’s school education department issued on March 31, the verification will focus on students in Classes 1, 2, 8, 9, and 11.<\/p>\n
However, this move has faced criticism from educational institutions throughout Maharashtra, which have labeled it a misuse of time and resources. They emphasize that student enrollment is already connected to Aadhaar numbers and that Class 11 admissions are managed through a centralized government process.<\/p>\n
Schools are currently administering Periodical Assessment Tests (PAT) and are concerned about how to carry out the physical verification while exams are ongoing.<\/p>\n
Mahendra Ganpule, representing the Maharashtra School Principals\u2019 Association, expressed confusion over the necessity of this verification. He stated, “Nearly all children in government schools have their Aadhaar linked to their records on the SARAL portal. We fail to see the rationale behind this physical verification at this time.”<\/p>\n
Ganpule also noted that the state had previously completed the Sanch-Manyata process, which finalizes the number of teaching positions based on actual student counts. “This adds to the perplexity concerning why a new round of physical verification has been initiated,” he remarked.<\/p>\n
Recent data indicates that the Aadhaar validation process for students has been successfully completed for over 95 percent of the 21.5 million students enrolled in Maharashtra schools.<\/p>\n
Educators suggest that any necessary physical verification should be limited to the five percent of students whose Aadhaar validation remains unresolved for any reason.<\/p>\n
Regarding the verification of student enrollment for Class 11, Mukund Aandhalkar, General Secretary of the Maharashtra Junior College Teachers\u2019 Association, has addressed a letter to the Director of Education, raising doubts about the validity of the process. In the letter, he states, “Admissions for Class 11 are managed by the State Government, and these admissions have been properly recorded, with student numbers confirmed accordingly. Thus, the intent behind this verification appears unclear and unnecessary, especially since many junior colleges have already finished their exams and declared summer breaks for Class 11 students, or are currently conducting exams.”<\/p>\n
