Nearly a month after a catastrophic fire devastated numerous stalls at the Dastkar Nature Bazaar, the marketplace has reopened with a special sale aimed at assisting the talented artisans whose years of labor were lost in the flames. This initiative seeks to help them rebuild their livelihoods.<\/p>\n
The pungent smell of smoke still hangs in the atmosphere, serving as a metaphor for the recent tragedy, but there is also a refreshing scent of resilience and determination.<\/p>\n
Upon entering the bazaar, located in Chhattarpur, South Delhi, one might feel as if nothing has changed. The vibrant blue and green fabric canopies flutter gently, lanterns sway, and trees rustle softly. However, the shadow of the fire remains a constant reminder of the past.<\/p>\n
Dastkar reports that the craft groups present at the site suffered a total loss of \u20b910.85 crore due to the fire on March 15, while the organization itself incurred damages to infrastructure amounting to \u20b950 lakh. In the aftermath, Dastkar successfully raised and distributed \u20b978.75 lakh to assist the affected artisans.<\/p>\n
A total of twenty-six craft groups lost all their inventory, products, and stall setups. Currently, twenty of these groups are participating in the fundraising Solidarity Bazaar that opened on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Neetu, a 27-year-old artisan at a bamboo fabric stall, shared that nearly all permanent stalls, including hers, were destroyed. “We lost approximately \u20b920-25 lakh worth of inventory. Fortunately, we had some stock stored at the Dastkar office, which we are now selling,” she explained.<\/p>\n
Her shop had been preparing for Dastkar\u2019s annual Summer Mela, where they had imported substantial materials from Mumbai for the exhibition. “We brought a lot of material for the event,” Neetu added.<\/p>\n
Next to Neetu, 24-year-old Nishita was arranging photo frames made from remnants of Pashmina shawls that had perished in the fire. “We are selling these frames to raise funds for our artisans back in Kashmir,” she noted. The frames are sold without a fixed price, with customers donating anywhere from \u20b9200 to \u20b92,000.<\/p>\n
The devastation was immense, according to Nishita. “We lost stock valued at nearly \u20b92 crore. Our materials and labor are expensive, as we use the finest Pashmina and exquisite embroidery,” she mentioned. A simple Pashmina shawl, crafted from the soft, warm wool of a specific breed of mountain goat, typically ranges from \u20b930,000 to \u20b950,000, while an embroidered shawl can reach up to \u20b94 lakh, depending on the artisan’s skill and the quality of the thread used.<\/p>\n
“Usually, we take our items back to Kashmir around February, but this year winter extended into March, allowing us to continue sales until then. After a brief break for Eid, I returned to find everything gone. I couldn’t even recognize my shop,” she recalled.<\/p>\n
Nishita displayed a photograph of her shop before the fire, which was filled with sturdy wooden shelves and display counters. “Now, all of it has turned to ashes,” she said.<\/p>\n
Shubham Dosaya, 23, lamented the loss of his father’s shop, which specialized in Jaipur and Bagru print fabrics. “Dastkar is doing everything possible to support us, including navigating the lengthy insurance claim process,” he stated.<\/p>\n
Dastkar has provided \u20b91 lakh to those who suffered losses up to \u20b950 lakh, and \u20b92 lakh to those who experienced greater losses. Dosaya expressed gratitude for the financial assistance, which has allowed artisans to settle some of their debts. “If we can recover enough to pay our artisans and cloth suppliers, we will be able to get back on our feet. We are not seeking large profits; we just want to survive,” he concluded.<\/p>\n
