Students in remote areas of Australia have historically faced the challenge of leaving home to pursue teaching careers, often hindered by the financial burden of relocation. However, a new initiative is enabling aspiring educators to study locally, while also addressing the pressing issue of teacher shortages in these regions.<\/p>\n
Leaders of the program report that Mount Isa is already showing promising results, with expectations that teacher shortages could diminish within the next five years. Recent graduates Ashlee Toms and Aria Miller, aged 18 and 17 respectively, found themselves back in their former high school as teacher aides less than six months after graduation. As they work towards their Bachelor of Education degrees in Mount Isa, they provide support to students who are only a few years younger than themselves.<\/p>\n
“The students often comment on how young we look. They’ll say things like, ‘Miss, you don’t even seem old enough to be teaching,'” Aria remarked.<\/p>\n
Schools in the northwestern region continue to grapple with staffing shortages, with teacher vacancy rates exceeding three times the state average. In December 2025, Queensland’s average teacher vacancy rate stood at 1.8 percent, but in the northern areas\u2014including Mount Isa\u2014it spiked to 5.9 percent.<\/p>\n
“We certainly observed the teacher shortage while we were in school. Many teachers would come for a couple of years and then move on,” Aria shared. “At times, teachers were assigned to teach subjects outside their expertise simply because there was a need. This situation is challenging for both the educators and the students.”<\/p>\n
Although both Ashlee and Aria aspired to become teachers, the conventional route required them to relocate over 1,000 kilometers to attend a university on the east coast, which posed significant financial challenges. Ashlee expressed her concerns about the costs: “I was worried about the expenses involved in attending university far away and didn’t want to burden my parents with that financial strain. I even considered taking a gap year to work and save money before pursuing my studies.”<\/p>\n
The launch of the EQuIPT program by the Queensland University of Technology in Mount Isa last year altered their trajectory. Mount Isa is one of four regional hubs in this initiative, which also includes locations in Far North Queensland, Central Queensland, and Doomadgee, with approximately 50 students participating statewide.<\/p>\n
The EQuIPT program, which stands for Employing Queensland: Innovative Pathways to Teaching, features two main components: a “grow your own” pathway that trains local students within their communities and a “send our best” stream that places urban university students into regional teaching positions. Participants in the program also receive a scholarship of $12,000, alleviating the need to relocate and significantly lowering educational expenses.<\/p>\n
This opportunity has allowed Ashlee and Aria to stay close to their families while cultivating their careers in their hometown. Working in schools while studying has already influenced the type of educators they aspire to be. Aria, who is focused on secondary education, acknowledges the challenges of entering classrooms filled with students her own age, but views the experience as a confidence-building opportunity. “Being a teacher aide first is beneficial because it allows you to understand classroom dynamics and how to interact with students,” she explained.<\/p>\n
Chris Pocock, the coordinator of Mount Isa Education Precincts, has been involved in education in the area since 1997 and collaborates with local schools. While fostering local talent is essential, he emphasizes the ongoing need for experienced educators. “When students gain experience working in schools while studying, they become familiar with school operations and daily life, something many students don’t encounter until later in their academic paths,” Mr. Pocock noted. “Though we would prefer experienced teachers in our classrooms, we recognize that early career professionals can help mitigate the shortage.”<\/p>\n
Mr. Pocock believes that a significant gap has existed between the demand for teachers in local schools and the obstacles that have hindered access to teaching careers. “It wouldn’t be accurate to claim that Mount Isa schools are fully staffed; we still face a considerable vacancy rate and are actively seeking teachers willing to come to our area,” he stated. “While we manage to cover classes, it limits our ability to implement additional programs or adjust schedules to accommodate teacher absences.”<\/p>\n
QUT Associate Professor Jennifer Clifton views the Mount Isa hub as a success and anticipates that the program could effectively alleviate teacher shortages within five years. “Many of our strongest future educators are already embedded in these communities, and they genuinely care about the local youth,” Ms. Clifton remarked. “The issue has largely been about overcoming barriers to studying, rather than a lack of interest in becoming teachers.”<\/p>\n
Currently, nine students are engaged in local studies while working in classrooms throughout Mount Isa. “If we can create a realistic and supported pathway into teaching for these individuals, we will establish a much more stable and sustainable workforce,” Ms. Clifton asserted. “Ideally, in five years, this program will no longer be necessary because critical vacancies will be filled, and we will have a robust pipeline of educators. I can already envision this in Mount Isa, given the community’s strong commitment to nurturing local teachers.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
