On Friday, new visual representations were unveiled for the ambitious “triumphal arch” that President Donald Trump intends to construct near Arlington National Cemetery, situated across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial.<\/p>\n
The proposed arch is designed to reach a height of 250 feet at Memorial Circle, adjacent to the Arlington Memorial Bridge, which serves as a roundabout leading into Arlington National Cemetery. The renderings depict the structure featuring the inscription “One Nation Under God,” crowned with a golden statue of Lady Liberty, her wings spread wide in gold.<\/p>\n
Each corner of the arch’s base is adorned with a golden lion, enhancing its grandeur. This proposed monument will stand more than double the height of the Lincoln Memorial, which measures 99 feet.<\/p>\n
Trump has expressed his desire for this arch to be the tallest of its kind globally, surpassing the 164-foot Arc De Triomphe in Paris. In January, he stated, “I’d like it to be the biggest one of all. We’re the biggest, most powerful nation.”<\/p>\n
On his social media platform, Trump proclaimed that the arch would be the “GREATEST and MOST BEAUTIFUL” structure “anywhere in the world.” He added, “This will be a wonderful addition to the Washington D.C. area for all Americans to enjoy for many decades to come!” He recently showcased a drawing during the White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday.<\/p>\n
The release of the renderings comes as the Trump administration has reached a tentative agreement with a group of veterans who have filed a lawsuit aimed at halting the construction of the arch. According to court documents, the administration has committed to notifying the public at least two weeks prior to the commencement of any construction work, in exchange for a temporary pause on the lawsuit.<\/p>\n
While this agreement delays the legal challenge for the time being, the veterans’ group retains the right to reactivate the litigation if the administration fails to adhere to the established legal procedures for the project.<\/p>\n
A group of Democratic lawmakers, led by Rep. Jared Huffman from California and Sen. Angus King of Maine, previously opposed Trump’s arch proposal earlier this year by submitting an amicus brief in federal court. They contended that the project breaches the Commemorative Works Act and necessitates congressional authorization.<\/p>\n
Additionally, a recent spending proposal for the National Endowment for the Humanities, released by the administration, indicated that taxpayer money would partially fund the arch.
